Novak Djokovic, the four-time National Bank Open presented by Rogers champion, won his 20th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon on Sunday. He defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, and moved into a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most men’s singles Major titles of all time.
The 34-year-old’s historical win on Centre Court at the All-England Club was nothing short of spectacular. He displayed incredible athleticism, steady play, and converted on points when it mattered most.
Competing in his first Grand Slam final, Berrettini put up a valiant effort but couldn’t quite match the play of the World No. 1.
The Italian did manage to take the first set, one he once trailed 2-5. After saving a set point, Berrettini put his foot on the gas and broke Djokovic in the ninth game. He then won the thrilling tiebreak and took the early lead, but that lead would be short-lived.
To start the second set, the World No. 1 broke the first two Berrettini serves and took complete control from that point on.
Djokovic cruised his way to a 2-1 lead and eventually closed it out in the fourth set on his third championship point opportunity.
The Serb delivered in clutch moments – something he’s done all tournament long. He converted on 6/15 of his break points compared to Berrettini’s 2/7. It was the difference maker in today’s final clash.
Djokovic has now won the first three Grand Slams of the season and will look to complete the sweep at the US Open where he will inevitably be the tournament favourite.
That’s six Wimbledon titles, 20 Grand Slam titles, and 85 career titles for Djokovic. Insanity.
