WTA Moms Continue to Inspire On and Off the Court

The Mom Energy on the WTA Tour is a powerful force these days and it appears to only be getting stronger. While the number of mothers in the game continues to grow their impact does too and tennis is better for it.

It’s probably not a coincidence that the match of the tournament on the women’s side at Wimbledon was a battle between two moms, Victoria Azarenka and Elina Svitolina. Both players offered incredible performances, evoking memories of their recent past at the top of the sport. The contest was a lesson in ball striking, resilience, will, and desire. It was must-see TV, as if they had never left when in fact, they’ve returned from maternity leave stronger and better than ever. In the end, it was Svitolina who came out on top in a thrilling third set tiebreak, but they both left the court as winners.

Svitolina is one of the great stories on the tour this season. Her return from giving birth to her daughter Skaï has been anything but timid and closer to extraordinary. She’s 13-8 on the year with one title in Strasbourg and is already ranked inside the top 30 after just ten tournament appearances which also includes a remarkable run to the Wimbledon semifinals.

American Taylor Townsend, who has a two-year-old son named Adyn, has formed a successful partnership on the doubles court with Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez. The pair has won two titles in 2023 in addition to making the Roland-Garros final.

The force of motherhood is about to get an even bigger boost with Naomi Osaka just welcoming her first child, Serena Williams will soon give birth to her second, and Angelique Kerber is poised for a comeback in the near future after becoming a mom. Of course, the biggest headline of the summer will be the return of Caroline Wozniacki at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers right here in Montreal, with her husband and two children in tow.

Together, the mothers of the WTA are leading by example, supportive of one another, and inspiring other women to pursue both their biggest career aspirations and their dreams of starting a family. Feel the Mother Energy for yourself at IGA Stadium from August 4-13.
