Sunday, Aug. 4 - Qualifying Round One

CASHMERE GRANDSTAND start at 11:00 am

  • [WC] Stacey Fung (CAN) d. [13] Jule Niemeier 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
    • After earning her spot in the qualifying draw by winning the pre-qualies tournament, Canada's Fung rallied from a break down twice in the deciding set to advance.
  • [2] Moyuka Uchijima (JPN) d. [WC] Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) 5-7, 7-5, 6-4
    • It seemed like Bouchard was heading to the second round of qualifying when she led by a set and a double break, but after the Canadian had the match on her racquet at 5-1, 40-30, Uchijima mounted a remarkable comeback, winning seven straight games and clinging to a lone break in the decider.
  • [9] Erika Andreeva d. [WC] Carson Branstine (CAN) 7-6(3), 6-2
    • After Andreeva eeked out a nail-biter of an opening set, the youngster pulled away with a pair of breaks in the second.

COURT 1 start at 11:00 am

  • [1] Katie Volynets (USA) d. Yuriko Miyazaki (GBR) 0-6, 6-3, 7-5
    • The top seed in qualifying had a nightmare start, losing the first eight games and trailing by a break in the second and third sets. Despite also failing to serve out the match the first time at 5-4 in the third, she eventually finished off Miyazaki at the second time of asking.
  • Nao Hibino (JPN) d. [WC] Katherine Sebov (CAN) 6-2, 2-6, 6-1
    • The pair exchanged lopsided sets before Hibino cracked Sebov's serve for good, breaking all four times in the decider.
  • [5] Harriet Dart (GBR) d. Robin Montgomery (USA) 6-3, 6-4
    • Two late breaks in the first set and two more early were enough to earn Dart the win.
  • [8] Ashlyn Krueger (USA) d. Priscilla Hon (AUS) 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-1
    • Krueger was two points from defeat down 3-5 in the second set tiebreak, but won four straight points to extend the match and then cruised through the decider.

COURT 4 start at 11:00 am

  • [7] Bernarda Pera (USA) d. Miriam Bulgaru (ROU) 1-6, 6-2, 6-1
    • After a slow start, Pera gained control of the match midway through the second set, winning 10 of the last 11 games.
  • [12] Chloe Paquet (FRA) d. Kimberly Birrell (AUS) 6-3, 6-3
    •  Paquet got off to slow starts in both sets but always found her footing, including winning the last six games in a row from 0-3 down in the second set.
  • [3] Greet Minnen (BEL) d. [ALT] Timea Babos (HUN) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4
    • Minnen bookended the match well, starting fast and then regaining control late as she rallied from 2-4 down to squeak through.
  • Destanee Aiava (AUS) d. [14] Alycia Parks (USA) 6-4, 6-3
    • Aiava had no trouble with Parks' might serve, breaking the American five times in the straight-set win.
  • [6] Taylor Townsend (USA) d. Emina Bektas [USA] 6-2, 6-2
    • It was déjà-vu on Court 4 as Townsend won four straight games from 2-2 in both sets.

COURT 3 start at 11:00 am

  • Kayla Day (USA) d. [16] Rebeka Masarova (ESP) 3-6, 7-5, 7-5
    • Day was the stronger of the two at the business end of the last two sets, breaking Masarova in the 12th game of each to complete the comeback.
  • Louisa Chirico (USA) d. [15] Arina Rodionova (AUS) 7-5, 6-2
    • Chirico got better as the match went along, limiting her opponent's chances and getting more effective at converting break points as she raced through the second set.
  • [4] Yafan Wang (CHN) vs. Mirjam Bjorklund (SWE) 7-5, 6-4
    • Wang was broken first in both sets, but each time mounted a late comeback to score the win.
  • [ALT] Carlo Zhao (CAN) d. Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) 7-5, 6-1
    • Canada's Zhao took full advantage of a last-minute spot opening up for her in the qualifying draw, edging a tight first set before cruising through the second into the final round.
