The gladiators enter the arena

Things are well underway at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers at IGA Stadium in Montréal. On Wednesday, the second round gets rolling as the world’s elite players take to the courts.

Centre Court is reserved for the top three seeds, who’ll play back-to-back-to-back. First up is Daniil Medvedev (3), who’ll be reconnecting with his favourite surface and his fantastic ambition of achieving the highest honours and perhaps even a second US Open crown. But first, he’ll have to get past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain.

The second match of the day pits Alexander Zverev (2), who should never be counted out of any tournament, against Jordan Thompson.

Immediately afterwards, World No.1 Jannik Sinner will start his title defense against Croatian qualifier Borna Coric, who’s played some impressive tennis since the start of the event.

Also starring in the day session is Stefanos Tsitsipas (8), who kicks things off on Rogers Court against Kei Nishikori.

They’ll be followed by Andrey Rublev (5) and Tomas Martin Etcheverry. While Rublev may not be having the best season of his career, there’s no doubting his tremendous talent.

At 11 a.m., Court 5 will be handed over to Tommy Paul (10), who could go very far at this Masters 1000, and then to Grigor Dimitrov (10) and his elegant shots, to the unpredictable Holger Rune (13) and finally to young gun Ben Shelton (11).

On Court 9, Ugo Humbert (12), Karen Khachanov (16) and Alejandro Tabilo (15) will fight for a spot in the third round.

Tennis under the lights

In the evening, Hubert Hurkacz (4), Sebastian Korda and Taylor Fritz will all make an appearance on Centre Court.
