First-round action continued on Monday at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, including a heavy Canadian slate on Centre Court.
Three of the local favourites were on Centre Court, two of them making their ATP Tour main-draw debuts, in a schedule that also featured one of the hottest prospects one tour.
Here are the results from Monday.
CENTRE COURT
- Jaume Munar (ESP) d. [Q] Dan Martin (CAN) 6-3, 6-0
- The match stayed on serve through six games but once Munar broke, the floodgates opened. At hold for 3-3 was the first of 10 games in a row for the Spaniard as he raced into round two.
- [Q] Tristan Schoolkate (AUS) d. Joao Fonseca (BRA) 7-6(5), 6-4
- Schoolkate delivered a lights-out serving performance, never dropping serve in a straight-set win over the Brazilian teen. Not only did he never get broken, the Aussie never allowed Fonseca a break point, winning 78 per cent of his total service points, dropping just four total points on his first serve. He converted one of his two break points and never let the teen back in it in the second set once he had the lead.
Not Before 7:00 PM
- Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) d. [WC] Liam Draxl (CAN) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4
- In his first ATP Tour main draw match, Draxl came flying out of the gate, racing to a quick 3-0 lead and taking the first set in less than half an hour. However, Carreno Busta settled in and finally solved the Canadian's serve midway through the second set. In the decider, with the raucous Toronto crowd at his back, Draxl fought to the end. He rallied from a break down to draw back to 3-3 but was immediately broken again and this time, Carreno Busta hung on.
- [WC] Alexis Galarneau (CAN) d. Arthur Rinderknech (FRA) 7-6(2), 6-3
- After a stinging loss two years ago on Centre Court, Galarneau looking to establish himself early and scored a quick break. While Rinderkench broke back and forced a tiebreak, the Canadian ran away with it to claim the opening set. One break in the sixth game of the second set was enough for Galarneau as he clung to his serve in the final game, saving two break points before converting his second match point. It was his first win in an ATP Tour main draw.
