Popyrin, Zverev Set Another Clash of Champions

The first quarter-final spots were on the line on Saturday as the round of 16 gots underway.

The defending champion and the top seed led the night session, while the final Canadians left in Toronto were competing in doubles.

CENTRE COURT - start at 12:30 PM

  • [26] Alex Michelsen (USA) d. Learner Tien (USA) 6-3, 6-3
    • Michelsen broke in his first return game of each set and, even though he did get broken back in the second, managed to remain on the front foot throughout. His one break in the first set was enough and he scored three in the second to punch his ticket to his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.
  • [11] Karen Khachanov d. [8] Casper Ruud (NOR) 6-4, 7-5
    • Khachanov was nearly perfect on serve, losing just a single point when landing his first delivery. He still had to hold off a Ruud comeback bid as the Norwegian, who dropped serve early in both sets, managed to break back and level the second set at 4-4. But after breaking to go up 6-5, Khachanov slammed the door shut with a love hold.

Starts At 7:00 PM

  • [18] Alexei Popyrin (AUS) d. [5] Holger Rune (DEN) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3
    • For the second match in a row, the defending champion rallied from a set down to knock off a higher seed. It was a slow start for Popyrin, who missed eight break point chances in Rune's first two service games only to be broken on the first one he faced. He then had three more when the Dane served for the set but could not convert. But from the second set on, Popyrin was perfect. He won every single break point, on both his own serve and Rune's in the second and third set, finishing off the win with a spectacular lob winner.
  • [1] Alexander Zverev (GER) d. [14] Francisco Cerundolo (ARG) 6-4, 1-0 ret.
    • Cerundolo got off to a quick start, breaking for a 3-1 lead before his body started to break down. He lost six of the next seven games before retiring one game into the second set.

MOTOROLA RAZR GRANDSTAND COURT - start at 1:30 PM

  • [2] Julian Cash (GBR) / Lloyd Glasspool (GBR) d. John Peers (AUS) / Jan Zielinski (POL) 6-2, 6-7(3), 10-8
    • This one nearly slipped away from the second seeds, as they missed five break points in the second set, two of which were match points at 6-5, and then let two minibreaks slip away in the match tiebreak, but after moving ahead 9-7 the finally clinch the win on their seventh match point.

Not Before 3:15 PM

  • Arthur Fils (FRA) / Ben Shelton (USA) d. [8] Hugo Nys (MON) / Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) 6-4, 7-5
    • The two big servers opened the match with a break and added another in their final return game, only facing on break point on their own delivery in the entire match.

Not Before 5:30 PM

  • Guido Andreozzi (ARG) / Sander Arends (NED) d. [WC] Liam Draxl (CAN) / Cleeve Harper (CAN)  7-5, 7-6(3)
    • The Canadians started fast, racing out to a 5-2 lead, only to lose five straight games to drop the opening set. Andreozzi and Arends then broke to go up 5-4 but went down love-40. They fought back to deuce, a break and match point simultaneously, which they Canadians won. But they could not complete the comeback as the Argentine-Dutch team won the tiebreak, eliminating the final Canadians at the National Bank Open.
