This Week in Tennis: Sinner Builds Momentum with Win in Vienna

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Sinner Re-Claims Vienna Title

Top seed Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to win the Erste Bank Open in Vienna for his fourth ATP title of the season. The former world No. 1 captured the 500-level title for the second time after triumphing in 2023.

Sinner overcame a tough first set and a cramp in his left hamstring in the third set to beat the third-ranked Zverev in just under two and a half hours. The Italian did not drop a set prior to Sunday’s final.

Sinner will compete at the Paris Masters before heading to the ATP Finals in Turin.

Zverev booked his spot in the ATP Finals on Friday, joining Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic.

Elsewhere on the ATP Tour, Joao Fonseca became the third-youngest ATP 500 champion in series history (since 2009) by winning the Swiss Indoors in Basel over the weekend.

The 19-year-old defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 to capture the second tour-level title of his career.

Fonseca climbed to a career-high rank of No. 28 after claiming his second career title. The Brazilian’s rise up the ATP ranks has been meteoric. He began the year at No. 145 after winning the Next Gen ATP Finals last December and followed up by winning his first ATP title in Buenos Aires earlier this season.

Davidovich Fokina has now lost four finals in 2025 but has risen to a career-best rank of No. 15.

Bencic Grinds to Title in Tokyo

Belinda Bencic won her second title of the season and 10th of her career with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Linda Noskova at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Bencic fought through back-to-back three-set matches, logging five hours and 23 minutes of court time, to reach the final. The victory will vault the former Olympic gold medalist back to the cusp of the Top 10, as she will head into the final stretch of the season as the world No. 11.

Elsewhere on the WTA Tour, Ann Li captured her first title in four years by beating Lulu Sun 7-6(6), 6-2 to win the Guangzhou Open.

Li finally broke through after reaching the finals in Singapore and Cleveland this season to lift her first trophy since winning the 250-title in Tenerife in 2021. She did not drop a set for the duration of the tournament.
