This Week in Tennis: Swiatek Adds to Trophy Case in Seoul

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Swiatek wins 25th career title

Iga Swiatek rallied to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 to capture the Korea Open on Sunday for the 25th WTA title of her career.

Alexandrova needed just 30 minutes to take the first set, but the 24-year-old, former world No. 1, battled back to win a hard-fought three-set affair. The Pole praised her opponent following the match.

“First of all, I want to congratulate Ekaterina for an amazing week and an amazing final,” Swiatek said. “Honestly, I don’t know how I won it because you were playing great and I just tried to stay alive.”

Swiatek has now won three of her past five tournaments, adding this 500-level tournament to her victories in Cincinnati and Wimbledon.

She will remain No. 2 in the WTA rankings behind Aryna Sabalenka.

Paolini Sparks Italian Win at Billie Jean King Cup

Jasmine Paolini defeated Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday as Italy beat the United States to win the Billie Jean King Cup for the second consecutive year.

No. 91 Elisabetta Cocciaretto upset 17th-ranked Emma Navarro for Italy’s first win earlier in the day, meaning the teams did not need to play the doubles tiebreaker.

Italy was playing in the final for the third consecutive year, losing to Canada in 2023. It was the sixth Billie Jean King Cup victory in Italy’s history.

Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-2, 7-6 (4) on Sunday to clinch the Laver Cup for Team World. It was the American’s second win over a top-three player at the event, as he upset Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday.

Fritz’s pair of upset victories accounted for five points in what was a 15-9 win for Team World in San Francisco.

It’s the third time in four years that Team World has triumphed over Team Europe.
