Toronto Day 7 Recap Served Up by Sobeys: Fritz Ousts Lone Canadian Diallo

The USA’s Top 3 were all in third-round action on Friday in Toronto.

Taylor Fritz spoiled the party for the Canadian crowd, eliminating the last-remaining Canuck in the singles draw, Gabriel Diallo. While Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton endured three setters and both came out on top.

Here is the Day 7 recap served up by Sobeys:

ON-COURT ACTION

In a rematch of their epic Wimbledon second-round match just 30 days ago, Fritz again got the better of Diallo, but in much simpler fashion.

The American managed an early break in each set and was barely budging on serve. Diallo won just ten return points and held a single break point as the Californian took down the giant from Montreal in straight sets in 75 minutes.

No. 2 seed Fritz’s quest for a second Masters 1000 title continues against Jiri Lehecka in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Tiafoe led off the American contingent in the day session. The Marylander was forced into his second-straight three setter against another unseeded opponent, Alexandar Vukic, but came out victorious.

Shelton closed out Day 7’s festivities with the match of the tournament so far, a thrilling three-set win against fellow countryman Brandon Nakashima, coming back after losing an 18-point opening set tiebreak.

Last year’s finalist Andrey Rublev inched another step closer to back-to-back finals in Canada, defeating No. 28 seed Lorenzo Sonego in three sets. After a frustrating end to the opener, the world No. 11 cruised through sets two and three – managing four breaks – to complete the comeback 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
