The big names entered the fray on Tuesday at Sobeys Stadium as second round action got underway.
Seeds began playing their opening matches at the 2025 National Bank Open today, including the top seed, the home favourite, and defending champion.
Follow the results as they happen.
CENTRE COURT - start at 12:30 PM
- [5] Holger Rune (DEN) d. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (FRA) 7-6(7), 6-3
- In a match that featured one game with break points, Rune defended his own delivery brilliantly and seized his opportunities when they presented themselves to sneak by the mighty Frenchman.
- [3] Lorenzo Musetti (ITA) d. [Q] James Duckworth (AUS) 7-5, 6-1
- Duckworth hung with Musetti for much of the first set, but the Italian broke to take it and then cruised through the second.
Not Before 7:00 PM
- Learner Tien (USA) d. [22] Denis Shapovalov (CAN) 7-6(4), 7-5
- Shapovalov served for both sets but struggled to make his first serve under pressure and was broken both times as Tien played better at the business end of each set. The Richmonhillian won a mere 10 points on his second serve and had 23 unforced errors to just 13 winners. Shapovalov has not won a match in his hometown since 2018. READ MORE
- [1] Alexander Zverev (GER) d. Adam Walton (AUS) 7-6(6), 6-4
- There were some shaky moments, including Zverev being broken when he served for the match, but the top seed managed to squeeze it out at the business end of both sets.
MOTOROLA RAZR GRANDSTAND COURT - start at 11:00 AM
- [Q] Emilio Nava (USA) d. [LL] Terence Atmane (FRA) 6-2, 7-5
- Nava took advantage of a slow start from Atmane, who only got into the draw minutes before the match started as a replacement for Ugo Humbert, to take the first set and even though the Frenchman settled in, the American broke late in the second to finish off the win in straight sets.
- [11] Karen Khachanov d. [Q] Juan Pablo Ficovich (ARG) 6-4, 6-2
- Despite some shakiness at times on his own serve, Khachanov was dialled in on return, breaking Ficovich four times, including in the Argentine's last three service games of the match.
- [18] Alexei Popyrin (AUS) d. [WC] Nicolas Arseneault (CAN) 7-6(7), 6-3
- The defending champion was pushed hard in the first match of his title defence by the Canadian wildcard. Arseneault match Popyrin blow for blow in the first set and even had a few set points, although none of them on his own serve. A missed forehand from the 18-year-old at 7-8 gave Popyrin the opening set and then the Aussie broke early in the second. Arseneault never solved Popyrin's serve and the champ rode that one break to victory. READ MORE
Not Before 5:00 PM
- [8] Casper Ruud (NOR) d. Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-3
- Ruud went on a tear to end the first set, breaking three times in a row, but only needed one late break in the second to wrap up a routine victory.
- [10] Daniil Medvedev d. [LL] Dalibor Svrcina (CZE) 7-6(3), 6-4
- The 2021 champion let a couple of break leads slip away in the opening set but recovered to win the tiebreak. He then rallied from a break down twice in the second, breaking in the final game to claim victory.
COURT 1 - start at 12:30 PM
- [26] Alex Michelsen (USA) d. [Q] Tomas Barrios Vera (CHI) 7-6(7), 6-3
- Down a break late in the first and facing three set points in the tiebreak, Michelsen mounted a wild comeback to take it before breaking three times to take the second set.
- Corentin Moutet (FRA) d. Jenson Brooksby (USA) 6-2, 6-1
- Moutet was all over the Brooksby serve in this one, breaking six times, including in all four of the American's service games in the second set.
- [14] Francisco Cerundolo (ARG) d. Jaume Munar (ESP) 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4
- The 24-point ninth game of the third set effectively decided the match as Cerundolo saved five break points before holding a promptly breaking Munar for the match in the very next game.
- Reilly Opelka (USA) vs [16] Tomas Machac (CZE) 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-3
- After two sets with no breaks of serve, there were three in the decider. The last two went the way of the 2021 runner-up, who advances to the third round.
COURT 4 - start at 12:30 PM
- [29] Alexandre Muller (FRA) d. Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) 2-6, 6-3, 7-5
- After Muller settled in to tie the match, the Frenchman finally put away Kecmanovic after the Serb broke back twice in the third set, serving out the match on the second time of asking.
- Tomas Martin Etcheverry (ARG) d. [24] Tallon Griekspoor (NED) 6-4, 7-6(4)
- Etcheverry raced out of the gate but putting Griekspoor away proved challenging. The Argentine missed three match points at 5-3, was broken when he served for it, and was down a minibreak in the tiebreaker. But he managed to win the last five points in a row to close it out.
- [30] Nuno Borges (POR) d. [Q] Facundo Bagnis (ARG) 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-2
- There was little between the two men for two sets, but Borges got hot late, winning the last five games in a row.
- [32] Matteo Arnaldi (ITA) d. [Q] Tristan Schoolkate (AUS)
- Arnaldi raced out of the gate in the third set, grabbing a quick double break lead which was enough even though Schoolkate got one of the breaks back.
