Swiatek, Svitolina Set Semifinal Showdown

The first match will pit six-time major champion Iga Swiatek, who is the highest-ranked player left in the top half of the draw, against Diana Shnaider, who just upset two-time champion Jessica Pegula in the fourth round.

In the second match, 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova will look to back up her upset of world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka when she takes on 2017 Toronto champion Elina Svitolina.

  • Swiatek was clinical on Monday night, needing just 64 minutes to reach her first semifinal in Toronto. The Pole took advantage of a nervous-looking Shnaider, breaking in the opening game as her opponent struggled to keep the ball in the court. Swiatek never let her foot off the gas, breaking twice in the first set and three times in a row in the second to secure the win. While Shnaider never found her rhythm, committing 22 unforced errors in just 15 games, the six-time major champion could not have played much cleaner, committing just eight errors and never losing more than two points in a game on her own serve. 
• [9] Elina Svitolina (UKR) d. [16] Ekaterina Alexandrova 3-6, 6-0, 6-3
  • It took some time for Svitolina to get going. Alexandrova pounced in the opening set, breaking for a 3-2 and saving the only break point she faced. But after Alexandrova broke to take the first set, that was the last gasp for the 16th seed. She only held one game point in the second set, and that was not until Svitolina was serving for the set at 5-0, having broken three times. The Ukrainian still managed hold to level the match after a 24-minute second set. She then broke again to open the third, taking a stranglehold on the match. Similar to her round-four match against Amanda Anisimova, things got a little dicey for Svitolina trying to close out the match. She was broken the first time she served for it at 5-2 but did not need to make a second attempt, as she broke Alexandrova to love to punch her ticket to the semis.

• [1] Katerina Siniakova (CZE) / Shuai Zhang (CHN) d. Storm Hunter (AUS) / Desirae Krawczyk (USA) 6-3, 6-4
  • Siniakova and Zhang faced a break point in their second service game, but from there, the top seeds cruised. They broke in the very next game, the only break of the first set and broke again in the fifth game of the second set. The pair never faced a break point again after the fourth game of the first set and added their third in the final game.
