Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.
Alcaraz To Miss French Open
Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will not vie for a third-straight title after announcing he has withdrawn from Roland-Garros due to a wrist injury.
The world No. 2 also withdrew from the Masters 1000 event in Rome, where he is also the defending champion.
“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland-Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to court,” Alcaraz wrote on social media. “This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger.”
Alcaraz sustained the injury in his first-round victory over Otto Virtanen in Barcelona on April 14.
The 22-year-old has a 22-3 record on the season, including titles in Doha and at the Australian Open, where he became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam.

"I think what's most important is to say that tennis needs Carlos," said Alcaraz’s main rival Jannik Sinner, after his opening win in Madrid. "Tennis is a much better sport when he's around."
Sinner took the world No. 1 mantle from Alcaraz after defeating the Spaniard in the Monte-Carlo final earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the Masters event in Madrid is in full swing and has seen dominant early-round wins from Sinner, Casper Ruud, and Alexander Zverev. Hometown favourite Rafael Jodar is also making waves at the tournament and has produced a pair of early upset wins over fifth seed Alex de Minaur and Joao Fonseca.

Sabalenka Rallies To Beat Osaka
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was in tough against Naomi Osaka in her fourth-round match in Madrid but was able to come back from a set and a break down to claim a 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-2 win.
Sabalenka, the defending champion in Madrid, advanced to the quarter-finals at a WTA event for the 17th consecutive tournament. She has not lost before that round since falling to Clara Tauson in the third round in Dubai in February 2025.
Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez continued to impress in Madrid, defeating Ann Li on Monday to advance to the quarter-final. She will face either No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva or Anna Bonar in the final eight.
Karolina Pliskova and Hailey Baptiste join Sabalenka and Fernandez as the other quarter-finalists awaiting their matchups.
