Fernandez Wins First Title of 2026

Leylah Annie Fernandez is on the board in 2026.

The Canadian won her first title of the season on Sunday, defeating Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 to win the Singapore Tennis Open

Fernandez put on an impressive show throughout the week, as she dropped just one set over the course of the tournament. The Lavalloise punctuated her victory by winning the final nine games of the match to finish off Gibson in 1 hour, 38 minutes.

Three of Fernandez’s six career titles have now come in Asia, adding to her 2023 title in Hong Kong and her 2025 victory in Osaka.

"This gives me a lot of confidence, but I do know that the very next day I have to start from zero," Fernandez told reporters. "Another big tournament starts. Beijing is not an easy tournament, with so many top players. So you know it's just going to get tougher from here on out.

"But seeing that I was able to go through this type of adversity this week gives me the belief that I can do it again."

Fernandez racked up another massive upset over top seed Mirra Andreeva, defeating the world No. 5 in the quarter-final for the second time this summer following her win at the National Bank Open in August.

The 24-year-old Fernandez jumps five spots to No. 26 in the rankings.

Czechia Wins 12th Billie Jean King Cup

Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova won a pair of singles matches on Sunday to help Czechia clinch its 12th Billie Jean King Cup title with a 2-0 win over Ukraine.

Muchova began the final with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Anhelina Kalinina and Noskova finished the sweep with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Elina Svitolina.

The Cup is Czechia’s first since 2018, bringing them to 12-1 in their BJK Cup Final appearances.

Czechia advanced past Great Britain in the quarters and Spain in the semis before topping Ukraine in the final. Ukraine defeated Belgium in the quarter-final and two-time defending champions Italy in the semis to reach its first final.
