The rain could not put a damper on semifinal night in Toronto, as Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina won a pair of three-set thrillers to set up what is sure to be a fantastic final on Thursday night.

Match Results

Swiatek overcame a furious comeback attempt from Elina Svitolina to advance to Thursday’s final with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win. It will be Swiatek’s first finals appearance this season.

Swiatek raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first and appeared to be well on her way to a victory. However, Svitolina began to find her form late in the first and fought back to 5-3 before the Pole finished off the set.

Just as she did in the quarter-final against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Svitolina completely dominated after dropping the first, taking a quick second set 6-1 to force a deciding third.

Swiatek was up to the challenge, as she began the set by saving two break points, and then fought through a seven-minute war of attrition to keep a grip on her serve. After reciprocating breaks, the former No. 1 would hold for 4-3 and then earn the decisive break, allowing her to serve out the match.

In the second semifinal, Rybakina rallied from a set down to defeat Coco Gauff 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to set up the final showdown against Swiatek.

Both women had their serves working in the first set, as the match opened with 11 straight holds. Rybakina would end up making the first mistake and failed to force a tiebreaker, dropping serve to hand Gauff the first set.

After the two held the first four games of the second set, Rybakina finally broke through and earned her first break of the match on her first opportunity since the opening game. The world No. 2 would win 12 of the next 14 points to take the second set 6-2.

Rybakina took her first lead of the match with another break to go up 3-2 in the third. After consolidating with a hold and adding one more break, the two-time Grand Slam winner would finish off the match on serve, saving two break points in the process, to set up what’s sure to be an excellent final on Thursday night.
