There was plenty of on-court action in Toronto on Monday as Sunday’s weather cancellations led to a jam-packed slate on all courts.

Match Results

Kayla Cross became the second Canadian to reach the second round after her 7-6(3), 7-5 upset of Katie Boulter on Centre Court. The 21-year-old showed plenty of resolve and did not let her more experienced opponent get the better of her as she hung on to win the first WTA main draw match of her career.

Things didn’t go as well for the four other Canadians on Monday as Bianca Andreescu, Carol Zhao, Cadence Brace, and Rebecca Marino all dropped their first-round matchups. Zhao was playing in her final match at the National Bank Open, as she announced earlier in the day that she will be retiring at the end of the 2026 season.

“I grew up playing here. I used to come every year as a fan from when I was like 7, 8 years old. Then I played here for the first time as a wildcard, I think when I was 15. That was like my first official WTA match,” Zhao said in her post-match press conference. “It's given me all the experience in the world, so very grateful and very proud to have represented Canada on this stage.”

Other winners on Monday included Shuai Zhang, Taylor Townsend, Liudmila Samsonova and Maya Joint.

Monday morning, the grounds hosted autograph and Q&A sessions with 2017 Roland-Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko and reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina.
