Leylah Annie Fernandez became the only Canadian woman to reach the third round in Toronto with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Renata Zarazua to open the night session on Centre Court.

Overnight sensation Alexandra Eala capped off Day 5 with her second-round match against Alycia Parks. The Toronto crowd was electric for the Filipino star, who was fresh off her first WTA title in Washington. The 21-year-old would not leave the crowd disappointed as she advanced with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win that sent the sold-out crowd into a frenzy.

Kayla Cross began the day with her second-round match against No. 31 Ann Li but was unable to earn her second WTA main-draw win, falling 7-6(2), 6-3 to Ann Li to kick off Day 5.

Two-time NBO champion Jessica Pegula rallied from a set down to beat Magdalena Frech 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Other top seeds advancing on Wednesday included: Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, Mirra Andreeva, Naomi Osaka, and Iva Jovic. Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova was stunned in straight sets by Caty McNally 7-6(5), 6-1. Noskova held a 5-1 lead in the first set before McNally won 12 of the next 14 games to complete the upset.
