Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz top seeds at the 2023 National Bank Open presented by Rogers

On Monday, Tennis Canada announced the names of the top seeds for the 2023 edition of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

On the men’s side, 20-year-old phenom and ATP World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will be the top seed in Toronto, while Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player on the WTA Tour since April 2022, will enter the tournament in Montreal as the top seed for the second straight year. The seedings follow the official ATP and WTA rankings as of today (Monday, July 31), with the Top 16 ranked players entered in each tournament being seeded.

In Montreal, Swiatek will look to continue her dominance as she aims for her first National Bank Open title. After winning her fourth title of the year in her hometown of Warsaw on July 30, it will be no easy feat to take down the reigning French Open champion. Nonetheless, her path to success won’t be smooth sailing with a stacked player field highlighted by Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Caroline Garcia as the remaining top five seeds.

“Fans are getting a real treat in Montreal this year with these extraordinary players as seen in our list of seeds, with the addition of beloved players like Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki,” said Valérie Tétrault, Tournament Director of the National Bank Open in Montreal. “Personally, I can’t wait to see what the standout storylines will be, as I feel like there are several players who have a legitimate chance to lift the trophy on August 13.”

Alcaraz will be making his debut on the courts in Toronto fresh off a dominant maiden Wimbledon title. This is the second National Bank Open tournament of his career, and he’ll look to make his mark against a number of worthy competitors. Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 champion, will look to win the title yet again, this time as the No. 2 seed. Rounding out the top five seeds are Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and the rising Danish star, Holger Rune.

“This year’s player field is one of the most exciting that I can remember, led by world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and so many great up-and-coming players hoping to get their hands on their first National Bank Open title,” said Karl Hale, Tournament Director of the National Bank Open in Toronto. “We can’t wait to welcome a lot of these players to Toronto and show them how beautiful the city is and how passionate the fans are.”

Canadians competing in the main draw

Bianca Andreescu and No. 11-seed Félix Auger-Aliassime will enter the tournament as Canada’s highest-ranked players among the three women and six men in the main draw. Andreescu’s play has been impressive as of late, as the 2019 National Bank Open champion recently reached the third round at Wimbledon. As for Auger-Aliassime, this will mark the fifth time he’s played at the National Bank Open and the third time as a seeded player, having reached the quarter-final in 2022.

The other Canadians in the main draw include Rebecca Marino, Leylah Annie Fernandez, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil, Gabriel Diallo, and Alexis Galarneau.

The official draw ceremonies for both tournaments, used to determine the week’s matchups, will be held on Friday, August 4 in Montreal and Toronto.
