Jabeur-Osaka Clash Highlights Wednesday Action: Follow the Live Results from Toronto

The most highly-anticipated first-round clash of the National Bank Open draw goes down on Wednesday afternoon.

Three of Canada's Billie Jean King Cup champions also kick off their campaigns.

Follow along as results are updated throughout the day.

Wednesday, Aug. 7 - Round One and Two

CENTRE COURT starts at 12:30 pm

  • [WC] Marina Stakusic (CAN) d. (Q) Erika Andreeva 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4
    • The Billie Jean King Cup hero overcame a blown lead in the first set and an ankle injury in the third to score her first-ever match win at the WTA 1000 level.
  • [WC] Naomi Osaka (JPN) d. [9] Ons Jabeur (TUN) 6-3, 6-1
    • Osaka used her big hitting to dictate from first ball to last, never giving Jabeur a chance to establish any kind of rhythm.

Not before 7:00 pm

  • [15] Leylah Annie Fernandez (CAN) d. [LL] Nao Hibino 6-3, 5-7, 6-1
    • A poorly-timed level drop from Fernandez sent the match to a third set, but the Canadian quickly reestablished herself to dominate the decider.
  • [3] Jessica Pegula (USA) d. Karolina Pliskova (CZE) 7-5, 6-4 - 2nd round
    • The defending champion did not have things all her own way, but she was the slightly more consistent of the pair as managed to get through in just two sets.

CASHMERE GRANDSTAND starts at 11:00 AM

  • Paula Badosa (ESP) vs Clara Tauson (DEN) 6-1, 6-4
    • Badosa brought her good form north of the border after a win in Washington, overpowering her Danish opponent with some big baseline hitting.
  • [LL] Harriet Dart (GBR) vs [14] Diana Shnaider
    • Shnaider seemed well on her way to victory up a set and a break but ended up being pushed to a limit by the lucky loser who even served for the match at 6-5 in the third before the 14th seed survived in a third-set tiebreak.
  • Magda Linette (POL) d. [WC] Rebecca Marino (CAN) 6-3, 6-4
    • Linette solved the mighty Marino serve early in the first and late in the second, finishing on a five-game run.

Not before 5:00 pm

  • Katie Boulter (GBR) d. (Q) Bernarda Pera (USA) 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
    • After splitting the first two sets, Boulter turned on the jets in the decider, winning the last five games in a row.

After suitable rest

  • [7] Sofia Kenin (USA)/Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) d. [ALT] Chloe Paquet (FRA)/Katie Volynets (USA) 6-0, 6-0
    • Kenin and Mattek-Sands lose just 10 points in the entire match in a 32-minute blowout.

COURT 1 starts at 11:00 am

  • [13] Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA) d. Marie Bouzkova (CZE) 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(1)
    • The 2022 runner-up had to battle in her return to Toronto, overcoming a few lulls before playing a lights-out final-set tiebreak.
  • Amanda Anisimova (USA) d. Caroline Dolehide (USA) 6-1, 6-4
    • Anisimova dominated the break points, saving all eight on her own serve and converting three of five on return to earn a straight-set win.
  • (Q) Ashlyn Krueger (USA) d. Elisabetta Cocciaretto (ITA) 6-3, 6-2
    • Krueger saved five break points in the opening set before cruising through the second with a pair of breaks of her own.
  • Yue Yuan (CHN) d. Cristina Bucsa (ESP) 6-3, 6-3
    • A single break was enough for Yuan in the first set, but she needed four to get the job done in the second.
  • Xinyu Jiang (CHN)/Fang-Hsien Wu (TPE) d. [2] Lyudmyla Kichenok (UKR)/Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) 7-6(7), 4-6, 10-7
    • Jiang and Wu play better in the tiebreaks, causing the biggest upset of the tournament so far by knocking out the second seeds.

COURT 4 starts at 11:00 am

  • Elise Mertens (BEL) d. (Q) Katie Volynets (USA) 6-3, 6-1
    • Mertens had all the answers in this first-round clash, breaking serve five times in the win.
  • Peyton Stearns (USA) d. Anna Blinkova 6-4, 6-3
    • Stearns seized the initiative with a few late breaks in the first set and rode that momentum through the second.
  • Liudmila Samsonova/Yafan Wang (CHN) vs Alycia Parks (USA)/Bibiane Schoofs (NED)
    • After splitting the first two sets, Samsonova and Wang came out firing in the match tiebreak, racing out to a quick 7-1 lead which was more than enough cushion.

After suitable rest

  • Sloane Stephens (USA)/Taylor Townsend (USA) d. Tereza Mihalikova (SVK)/Olivia Nicholls (GBR) 6-2, 6-3
    • Stephens and Townsend honed in on their opponents' serve, holding break points in all but two return games and breaking serve five times in a win that took just over an hour.
  • Marie Bouzkova (CZE)/Anna Danilina (KAZ) d. Timea Babos (HUN)/Nadiia Kichenok (UKR) 6-1, 7-5
    • Bouzkova and Danilina were in full control until they were broken serving for the match at 5-4, but the immediately broken again and closed it out on the second time of asking.
