This Week in Tennis: Top-Ranked Rybakina Ousted in Beijing, Withdraws from Wuhan

2026 National Bank Open

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Rybakina Stunned in Beijing

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina’s Asian swing was short-lived.

The US Open champion was stunned by Alina Charaeva in the second round of the China Open after the world No. 118 rallied from a set down for the victory. Charaeva became just the ninth player ranked outside the Top 100 to defeat the world No. 1 since 1975.

Following the loss, Rybakina also withdrew from next week’s 1000-level event in Wuhan as she continues to deal with lingering injuries she sustained earlier this summer. The knee and foot issues caused her to withdraw from her quarter-final match in Cincinnati against Iga Swiatek.

"I'm very sorry to the fans who were looking forward to seeing me play," Rybakina posted on social media. "I'll take some time to rest and recover. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. See you next year."

Second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka was also upset in Beijing, as she was eliminated in the third round by 26th seed Nikola Bartunkova. Sabalenka was unable to convert a single break point in the upset loss.

It was Bartunkova’s second-career win over a Top 10 player, following her win over then No. 10 Belinda Bencic earlier this year at the Australian Open.

After the match, Bartunkova called it the biggest win of her career and now moves on to face Sinja Kraus in the quarter-final.

Davidovich Fokina, Medvedev snag 250 Titles

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina claimed his second title of the season with a straight-sets win over Hubert Hurkacz to lift the trophy in Chengdu.

It’s also the second ATP title of his career, adding to the first he won this past June in Mallorca. The Spaniard has now won his past two finals after losing the first five he reached to start his career.

Elsewhere on the ATP Tour, former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev captured his third title of 2026 with a straight-sets win over Andrey Rublev in the Hangzhou Open final.

Medvedev now has 22 career titles on hard courts, moving him past Andy Roddick and into a tie with John McEnroe, Michael Chang, and Stefan Edberg for the 11th-most in the Open Era.
