Pospisil's Career Ends with Hard-Fought Loss; Opelka, Arseneault Among Sunday Winners

There is A LOT going on on Sunday at Sobeys Stadium. Three qualifying matches have to be completed and main draw play begins too.

Follow the results as they happen.

CENTRE COURT - start at 10:30 AM

  • Qualifying Final - [30] [WC] Dan Martin (CAN) d. [16] Taro Daniel (JPN) 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 7-5
    • In a match that was postponed at 5-5, deuce, on Martin's serve in the third set on Saturday, the Canadian overcame letting multiple chances to finish it off the previous day. After the restart, he held serve and then broke Daniel to qualify for his first ATP Tour main draw, increasing the Canadian contingent in Toronto to eight.

Not Before 12:30 PM

  • First Round - Reilly Opelka (USA) d. Sebastian Ofner (AUT) 7-6(6), 7-5
    • Despite only putting 45 per cent of his first serves in play and double-faulting 10 times, Opelka took advantage of some tight play from Ofner late in both sets to sneak out in two. It is Opelka's first trip back to Canada since reaching the Toronto final in 2021.

Not Before 2:30 PM

  • First Round - [Q] Tomas Barrios Vera (CHI) d. Gael Monfils (FRA) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3)
    • The qualifier saved four match points, two in each of his final two service games, before running away late in the tiebreak.

Not Before 7:00 PM

  • First Round - [Q] Facundo Bagnis (ARG) d. [WC] Vasek Pospisil (CAN) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
    • Pospisil gave it everything he had in the last match of his career, even rallying from a break down in the second set to force a decider. But a leg injury suffered in the first set limited the Canadian's legend and he did not have enough left in the tank to get one more win.
  • First Round - [Q] James Duckworth (AUS) d. Juncheng Shang (CHN) 6-3, 7-6(3)
    • Even though he let break leads slip away in both sets, Duckworth was able to finish strong at the end of both sets.

MOTOROLA RAZR GRANDSTAND COURT - start at 11:00 AM

  • First Round - Adam Walton (AUS) d. Benjamin Bonzi (FRA) 4-6, 6-0. 6-3
    • Walton responded to adversity brilliantly through the match, bouncing back with a dominant second set after dropping the first and then securing the lone break in the decider having saved five break points in the previous game.

Not Before 4:00 PM

  • First Round - Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (FRA) d. [Q] Shintaro Mochizuki (JPN) 6-4, 6-2
    • The big Frenchman lost just five points when landing his first serve and saved the lone break point he faced to get off the court in 71 minutes.
  • First Round - [WC] Nicolas Arseneault (CAN) d. [Q] Valentin Royer (FRA) 6-3, 7-6(4)
    • Showing few nerves in his first match on the ATP Tour, the 18-year-old Canadian was the more composed of the two late in both sets to sneak out the key points and score his first tour-level win.

Not Before 5:00 PM

  • First Round - Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) vs Quentin Halys (FRA) 4-6, 6-4, 7-5
    • Kecmanovic had his back against the wall in the third, saving five break points in the eighth game and a match point in the tenth before catching fire, winning the last nine points of the match in a row.

COURT 1 - start at 10:30 AM

  • Qualifying Final - [8] Alexander Blockx (BEL) d. [26] Duje Ajdukovic (CRO) 6-4, 6-4
    • Blockx broke right out of the gate upon the restart and never trailed, breaking again early in the second set as he stayed on the front foot throughout.

Not Before 5:00 PM

  • First Round - [Q] Juan Pablo Ficovich (ARG) d. Jacob Fearnley (GBR) 6-3, 6-2
    • Ficovich got hot late in both sets, going on multi-game runs to finish them off.
  • First Round - [Q] Emilio Nava (USA) d. Zizou Bergs (BEL) 6-1, 7-6(4)
    • Leading by a set and a break, Nava had to fight for it in the second set but scored the lone minibreak in the second set tiebreak to deny Bergs' comeback bid.

COURT 4 - start at 2:30 PM

  • First Round - Learner Tien (USA) d. [Q] Colton Smith (USA) 6-4, 7-5
    • Things got a little dicey for Tien when he was broken serving for the match, but he immediately broke back and served it out at the second time of asking.
  • First Round - Tomas Martin Etcheverry (ARG) d. [Q] Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA) 6-4, 4-6, 7-5
    • The breaks were all late in the sets, including three in the final four games of the deciding set, but Etcheverry was able to serve it out at the second time of asking.

COURT 3 - start 10:30 AM

  • Qualifying Final - [3] Tristan Schoolkate (AUS) d. [27] Govind Nanda (USA) 6-3, 6-0
    • Having paused after the first set, the second day was all Schoolkate as he won all six games on Sunday in just 30 minutes to advance to the main draw.

Not Before 5:00 PM

  • First Round - Roman Safiullin d. [Q] Ugo Blanchet (FRA) 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(9)
    • In an absolute epic, Safiullin saved three match points in the third set tiebreak and converted his fourth to slip into the second round.
