Gates opened on Saturday morning at Sobeys Stadium to kick off the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto.
Thousands of fans flooded to the opening day of the event, which featured 16 qualifying matches flanked by tons of activities as part of 407 ETR Family Weekend. Alas the day came to an abrupt end as the heavens opened around 6 pm.
Here is the Day 1 Recap served up by Sobeys.
Match Results
It was a tough day for the host nation, with three of the four Canadians competing being defeated, while the fourth will have to wait to finish his match.
Juan Carlos Aguilar lost in straight sets in the opening match of the day on the Motorola razr Grandstand to top qualifying seed Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-1. In an eerily similar match, Justin Boulais was beaten by the same scoreline by fourth seed James Duckworth. Alvin Nicholas Tudorica then went out 6-2, 6-3 against fifth seed Valentin Royer.
Dan Martin got the rare experience of playing a qualifying match on Centre Court. With a threat of rain in the afternoon, his match with Taro Daniel was moved to the big stage to try and speed up play. Martin had plenty of chances to finish off the matche on Saturday as he led the first-set tiebreak 6-4 and led the third set 5-3. But he found himself deadlocked at 5-5 in the decider when rain postponed play.
