Toronto Day 10 recap served up by Sobeys: Zverev Ends Popyrin’s Run in Canada

It was fun while it lasted. Alexei Popyrin is no longer undefeated in the National Bank Open main draw.

The Aussie’s incredible record in Canada received its first blemish on Monday night as his title defence came to an end in the Toronto quarter-finals at the hands of top seed Alexander Zverev. He will meet Karen Khachanov in the Final Four.

Here is the Day 10 recap served up by Sobeys.

On-Court Action

Popyrin came into the quarter-finals a perfect 9-0 in the main draw in Canada, dating back to his improbable title run in Montreal last year. And he got off to a good start on Monday night, sneaking out the first set in an epic tiebreak.

But Zverev broke early in the second set and was largely on the front foot the rest of the way. Even though Popyrin broke back, the German finished off the set with a break that was part of a five-game run. Once he led again 3-0 in the third set, he never let the defending champ back in it.

Zverev will meet a familiar foe, Karen Khachanov, in the semifinals. The 11th-seed defeated first-time Masters 1000 quarter-finalist Alex Michelsen in two sets to finish off the day.

All of the remaining doubles quarter-finals were contested on Monday. Three teams, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, and Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni all reached the semifinals. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz were already waiting as they advanced on Sunday with a walkover from Arthur Fils and Ben Shelton.

The National Bank Open’s wheelchair tennis tournament in Toronto once again delivered on Day 2. Day 1’s winners, Rob Shaw and Thomas Venos, went head-to-head in the opening match and it was the Anmore-native Venos who improved to 2-0 after a 7-4, 7-4 win.

Barry Henderson and Shawn Courchesne met in a thriller in the following match. In the decisive tiebreak, Courchesne led 6-4 but Henderson rallied to take the match 6-8, 7-5, 8-6.

The doubles match was extended to a best two-out-of-three full sets for Day 2. The duo of Venos and Courchesne took the opener and were up 5-1 in the second. Henderson and Shaw cut the deficit to one game, saving three match points, but came up short 6-4, 6-4.
