Monday was a day of two careers at opposite ends. On the one hand, there was Vasek Pospisil, the Canadian tennis icon who played his final professional match. And then there was Nicolas Arseneault, who made a winning debut on the ATP Tour.
Here is the Day 2 recap served up by Sobeys
Match Results
The biggest on-court highlights of the day came as the sun was starting to get low.
First, there was 18-year-old Arseneault. The teen was granted a wildcard into his first main draw on the ATP Tour and he took full advantage. Arseneault looked calm, cool (even in the 40-degree heat) and collected as he took down qualifier Valentin Royer in straight sets to make a winning start on tour.
Then there was Pospisil, playing in what turned out to be the final match of his professional career. He put up a strong fight against Facundo Bagnis on Centre Court but, as he would concede in his post-match press conference, the Canadian had nothing left in the tank. His career came to an end with a three-set loss. He was honoured on court with a ceremony after his match.

The day kicked off with three qualifying matches wrapping up to complete the draw. The highlight was Canadian Dan Martin, whose clash with Japan’s Taro Daniel was locked at 5-5, deuce, on Martin’s serve in the third set when it started raining on Saturday. Martin came flying out of the gate on the restart, quickly holding serve and then racing ahead love-40, triple match point, on Daniel’s serve. He converted his fourth match point to qualify for his first ATP Tour main draw.
Main draw play began not long after, with 2021 Toronto runner-up Reilly Opelka kicking off the 2025 event with a win over Sebastian Ofner.
