The top-half seeds entered the fray on Tuesday at Sobeys Stadium, with the highest-ranked players largely taking care of business.
There were not too many surprises on this day in Toronto, with most of the seeds in action advancing to the third round, including three former titlists in Canada. The biggest surprise, though, came at the expense of the crowd’s favourite son.
Here is the Day 4 recap served up by Sobeys
On-Court Action
The seeds got the job done during the day session on Centre Court in similar fashion. Both Holger Rune and Lorenzo Musetti had to battle through a tough opening set before taking a fairly routine second.
Top seed Alexander Zverev had a similar result. He too battled through a tough first-set tiebreak but had to dig deep in the second set too. The 2017 champion help his nerve though, breaking in the 10th game to seal the win.
Alexei Popyrin got kicked off his title defence with a win at the expense of local wildcard Nicolas Arseneault. The 18-year-old Canadian had won his first ATP Tour match on Sunday and gave the reigning champ everything he could handle in the first set, but the Aussie squeaked it out and hung on to take the second.
