Destination NBO by STM: Majchrzak Wins Maiden ATP Title

Welcome to the Destination NBO by STM Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the ATP Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Montreal, which takes place from Aug. 1 to Aug. 13.

Days until National Bank Open: 46

Majchrzak Breaks Out in 's-Hertogenbosch

Unseeded Kamil Majchrzak broke out in a big way at the Libema Open, defeating eighth-ranked Alex de Minaur 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5) to win the first ATP title of his career.

The 30-year-old Pole earned three Top 10 wins in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, defeating No. 4 Félix Auger-Aliassime, No. 8 Daniil Medvedev, and de Minaur en route to the title. Majchrzak is just the second man to beat three Top 10 opponents on his way to an ATP 250 title since 2009. Grigor Dimitrov accomplished the feat in Brisbane in 2017.

“This is an incredible, unbelievable and emotional feeling for me. I am living my dream,” Majchrzak told ATP.com. “It's just unbelievable to go through these emotions, to live through these emotions, to even compete at that level and to win an ATP title. That's the ultimate goal for a tennis player. Now I've accomplished it. Now I have to set myself a new goal.”

He jumps to a career-high rank of No. 49 with the victory.

Shelton Gets Back on Track in Stuttgart

After a disappointing second-round exit at Roland-Garros, world No. 5 Ben Shelton got his grass season started in style, beating fellow American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to win the Boss Open in Stuttgart.

With the win, the 23-year-old now has a title on grass, clay (Munich), and hard court (Dallas) this season. Shelton has now won the second-most titles on the ATP Tour this season, trailing only world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who has five.

"Certainly a difficult week, not an easy week to get through,” said Shelton. “I’m pretty exhausted, but to play the way I did against the quality of opponents I played, in very tight matches and getting a win today against one of the best grass-court players in the world is a huge boost for my confidence. I’m just happy to get my first title here in Stuttgart.”

A pair of 500-level tournaments are on deck as the players get closer to Wimbledon.

ATP 500 - London

Fresh off his loss at the Libema Open, de Minaur heads to London for the HSBC Championships, where he will be the top seed. The Australian will open the tournament against Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who is looking to snap a four-match losing streak.

Other notable players in the field include second seed Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik. Majchrzak will also be in the field, as well as Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

ATP 500 - Halle

Reigning Roland-Garros champion Alexander Zverev will return to the court in Halle as he gets his grass season started at the Terra Wortmann Open. The tournament’s top seed has a potential matchup against Joao Fonseca in the second round.

The second-seeded Auger-Aliassime opened the tournament with a win over Nuno Borges as he looks to bounce back from his upset loss to Majchrzak.

Roland-Garros runner-up Flavio Cobolli, Daniil Medvedev, and Shelton will also be vying for the title this week in Halle.
