Destination NBO by STM: Tiafoe, Cerundolo Win First ATP 500s

Welcome to the Destination NBO by STM Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the ATP Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Montreal, which takes place from Aug. 1 to Aug. 13.

Days until National Bank Open: 39

Tiafoe Wins All-American Final in Halle

Frances Tiafoe won the biggest title of his career on Sunday, defeating fellow American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to win the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle.

It was the first ATP 500 title of Tiafoe’s career after his first three trophies came at the 250 level. The 28-year-old is now 1-4 in finals above the ATP 250 level. Tiafoe was impressive all week in Halle, as he earned three Top 10 wins - No. 9 Fritz, No. 4 Félix Auger-Aliassime, and No. 10 Flavio Cobolli - en route to the title.

The American has found his game to kick off the grass season after reaching the quarters in Stuttgart before his win in Halle.

“I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals. I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career,” Tiafoe said. “A couple of weeks ago, I had one of the toughest losses of my career at the French Open, and to come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here for my biggest title, beating the players I did…it just feels good to get this done.”

Tiafoe rose nine spots into the Top 20 and starts this week ranked No. 19 on the ATP Tour after his first title of the year.

Cerundolo Conquers London

Over in London, Francisco Cerundolo also captured the first ATP 500 title of his career, defeating Tommy Paul 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 to reign at The Queen’s Club.

The 27th-ranked Argentinian rallied from a set and break down to win the biggest title of his career. Four of his five match wins in London needed three sets.

"I can't believe it. I fought really hard during the whole week, every match was a war, and I think I got the reward," said Cerundolo. "Winning this title for me is unbelievable. Coming from Argentina and winning Queen's, such a historic event on grass. I never imagined I'd lift this trophy."
