On a day marked by an exodus of seeds, one of the most popular players to ever take the court at IGA Stadium played his final match at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

It’s fitting that Gaël Monfils’ last match in Montreal came against one of the players being labelled as one of the ‘next ones’ hoping to occupy the place in tennis that the Frenchman once had during his prime. American Learner Tien defeated Monfils 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to setup a third-round meeting against his compatriot Tommy Paul.

Monfils was honoured on Centre Court after the match with a tribute video that had everyone in the stadium feeling emotional.

Back Injury Forces Auger-Aliassime to Miss Home Date

Speaking of emotional, fans expecting to see Félix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday night were left bitterly disappointed after the tournament’s second seed was forced to withdraw with a back injury just before his start time.

Not long after the announcement, top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany was upset by Tallon Griekspoor in three sets and Daniil Medvedev was ousted by another Dutch player, Botic van de Zandschulp, leaving Aussie Alex de Minaur as the highest ranked player left in the draw.

Defending champion Ben Shelton moved onto the third round as did Joao Fonseca, Rafael Jodar, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, Lorenzo Musetti, and Arthur Fils.
