Montreal Day 6 Recap Served Up by IGA: Fils, Jodar Earn First Fourth Round Spots

After an eventful day on Wednesday, Alex de Minaur, the tournament’s highest remaining seed, was eliminated on Thursday at the hands of British veteran Cameron Norrie. Norrie will next face talented Frenchman Arthur Fils on Saturday. Fils was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Mariano Navone of Argentina. 

Meanwhile, Spaniard Rafael Jodar, last week’s finalist in Washington, continued his strong play by knocking out Lorenzo Musetti of Italy. He’ll now meet eighth-seeded Czech Jiri Lehecka.

Nuno Borges vs. Luciano Darderi and Brandon Nakashima vs. Arthur Rinderknech round out the next matches in the bottom half. 

In doubles, the Canadian pair of Duncan Chan and Alexis Galarneau got the better of Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo to advance. 

Celebrating Women and Girls in Sports on National Bank Day 

Thursday was National Bank Day at the NBO. For the occasion, Tennis Canada’s Game. Set. Equity. Commitment took centre stage. 

In the afternoon, young girls took part in Tennis Canada’s mentorship program in collaboration with Jeunesse au soleil. They were able to job shadow several tournament employees for a few hours. The objective was to show them all the career possibilities in tennis that go far beyond playing on the court. 

For the evening session, the NBO welcomed three members of the Walter Cup-winning Montreal Victoire: General Manager Danièle Sauvageau, Head Coach Kori Cheverie, and Assistant Coach Caroline Ouellette. The trio performed the coin toss prior to the first match and sat down for a roundtable interview that will be published in the coming days on Tennis Canada’s channels.
