This Week in Tennis: Alcaraz Remains Unbeaten in 2026

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Alcaraz Surges Past Fils in Doha

Carlos Alcaraz took little time to show the world why he remains the top-ranked player in the world.

The 22-year-old needed just 50 minutes to beat Arthur Fils in the Doha final 6-2, 6-1 to win the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. The Spaniard remains unbeaten with a 12-0 record and a pair of titles in 2026.

“It’s been a really strong start to the year. It wasn’t easy,” Alcaraz said after the match. “I had to be strong mentally with my team. I’m just playing great tennis, and I’m really happy about this week. This trophy means a lot to me."

Alcaraz, who became the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open last month, dropped just one set en route to his 26th career title. It was also his ninth ATP 500 trophy, tying him with Andy Murray for the fourth-most at that level since the series was introduced in 2009. He now trails only Roger Federer (16), Rafael Nadal (15), and Novak Djokovic (14).

The world No. 1 will compete next at Indian Wells, where he will look to extend his unbeaten season and win the title for a third time.

Pegula Wins 10th Title in Dubai

Jessica Pegula had made seven consecutive semifinal appearances without a title victory to show for it, but was able to turn the tide on Saturday.

The world No. 5 captured her first trophy of 2026 with a straight-sets win over Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4 to win the Dubai Tennis Championship.

“It was a great atmosphere, especially the last two nights, not only supporting me but supporting all the girls here that compete and fight so hard every single day all week,” Pegula said. “We really appreciate it. What’s most fun for us is being able to play in front of the fans, so thank you guys so much for coming out.”

The American had reached at least the semifinal in each of her past six tournaments entering Dubai, but only reached the final once, in Wuhan, where she fell to Coco Gauff. Things looked dire for Pegula in the Dubai semifinal, but she was able to rally from a set and break down to upset second-seeded Amanda Anisimova to advance.

There was no such trouble for Pegula in the final, as she controlled the match from start to finish for the victory.

It was her 10th career title and fourth at the WTA 1000 level.

Dabrowski Hits New Career High

Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski reached a new career-high ranking of No. 2 this week after she and partner Luisa Stefani defeated Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 6-3 in Dubai for her sixth-career WTA 1000 trophy.

“It’s a great feeling, but honestly, rankings come and go, and I'm more interested in just having a great partnership and going deep in tournaments consistently,” said Dabrowski of her career-high ranking of No. 2.

Dabrowski and Stefani captured their second 1000-level tournament as a team, following their National Bank Open title in 2021.
