This Week in Tennis: Chwalinska Adds Wuhan Title to Cinderella Season

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Chwalinska Caps Breakout Season

Maja Chwalinska has been one of the breakout stars on the WTA Tour, and she is finishing her 2026 in style, defeating Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wuhan Open final to win the first title of her career.

The 25-year-old became the fourth woman since the format was introduced in 2009 to win her first career title at a 1000-level event, joining Naomi Osaka (Indian Wells - 2018), Bianca Andreescu (Indian Wells - 2019) and Victoria Mboko (Montreal - 2025).

"It means a lot. It tastes very sweet,” Chwalinska said in her post-match press conference. "I feel like I still don't realize that I won. So I feel like I just need a few days. I'm just very grateful that my hard work paid off today."

The Pole added hardware to an impressive season that saw her reach the final at Roland-Garros and jump from a year-end 2025 rank of 133 to No. 11 following her win Sunday in Wuhan.

On the doubles side in Wuhan, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Luisa Stefani continued their red-hot October, toppling Storm Hunter and Katerina Siniakova to win their third consecutive tournament.

It was the duo's sixth title of the season and 26th career doubles title for Dabrowski.

Davidovich Fokina Wins First Masters Title

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina continued his own breakout season in Shanghai, defeating fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar to win the first Masters 1000 event in his career. He has now won two of his past three tournaments after winning in Chengdu in late September.

The 27-year-old came into the 2026 season without a single ATP title but has emerged a winner three times this year despite losing two months due to a back injury from July to his return in Chengdu.

"I cannot describe with words what I achieved in this Chinese swing," Davidovich Fokina said. "I never thought I would have two titles after two months out.”

Davidovich Fokina has now won three consecutive ATP Tour finals after losing five straight to begin his career. He will reach a new career high of No. 13 following the win.
