Jovic Wins Second Title in Guadalajara

One year ago, then 17-year-old Iva Jovic broke through in Guadalajara to win the first WTA title of her career.

One year later, the American returned to the site of her first triumph and successfully defended her title, beating Peyton Stearns 6-4, 6-2 to earn her second career WTA trophy.

"It's amazing to be back here in the final with this beautiful trophy and this sombrero," Jovic said during the trophy presentation. "I love it here. You guys have given me so much energy. The crowd is my favourite thing about coming here, so thank you so much for being here."

Seeded second at the tournament, Jovic dominated the rest of the field and did not drop a set throughout the duration of the tournament, which included wins over Cristina Bucsa, Magdalena Frech, and Zeynep Sonmez. 

It has been the best season of Jovic’s career as she has won a title for the second-straight year, adding to a final appearance in Hobart and a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open. She will now rise to a new career high of No. 13.

Canada Reaches Final 8 at Davis Cup

Félix Auger-Aliassime helped Team Canada punch their ticket to the Davis Cup Final 8, beating French No. 1 Arthur Rinderknech in singles action to clinch the best-of-five tie 3-1 on Saturday.

Canada went into Saturday needing just one point in three matches to advance, and leaned on the country’s No. 1 player to secure the victory.

“Félix is our number one; he has a lot of experience. We’ve gone through big challenges like winning the Davis Cup title. So he is a great role model for the young players joining the team,” said Canadian captain Frank Dancevic.

“He has already done a great job setting an example. How do we do things on Team Canada, how do we prepare mentally and physically. And he’s a guy who really embraces being a role model. He gives a good example to the young guys and they look up to him on ways to get better during the week.”

Canada will now head to Bologna for the Final 8 from Nov. 24 to 29.
