No. 7 Iga Swiatek continued to dominate the competition in Toronto, beating Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 to start the day session on Centre Court. The six-time Grand Slam champion won 11 of 12 games at one point to breeze into the round of 16.

Two-time NBO champ Jessica Pegula finished off the afternoon session with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kamilla Rakhimova in a match that was delayed by rainfall. 

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka also earned a straight-sets win 6-3, 6-4 over Shuai Zhang.

The doubles draw got underway on Thursday with a tough start for the Canadian contingent as Gabriela Dabrowski and new partner Ekaterina Alexandrova lost their first-round match to Coco Gauff and Caty McNally. Sisters Leylah Annie and Bianca Jolie Fernandez received a wild card for the tournament but were ousted in the first round by Elise Mertens and Diana Shnaider 6-1, 6-2.

Fan favourite Alexandra Eala paired with Venus Williams in the doubles, but the team was eliminated by Liudmila Samsonova and Miyu Kato in the first round.

Across The Grounds

Doubles partners Ingrid Neel and Giuliana Olmos took part in a pro-am on the grounds, one day before they open their women’s doubles campaign against the second-seeded team of Aleksandra Krunic and Anna Danilina.

The evening concert series continued on the Tennis Canada main stage with Jade Hilton putting on a soulful set for the crowd. The former Division I tennis player was named Songwriter of the Year at the Mississauga Music Awards.
