Who can register as a new ball person?
For the Montreal and Toronto tournaments, new ball retrievers must be over 12 years old and under 16 years old during the OBN. To learn more about the criteria and the involvement process, visit this page.
What is the process to be a ball person?
Submitting your online application is only the first step in the registration process. The deadline to register is May 1. Once you have submitted your form, you will be contacted by Tennis Canada and informed of the dates of our National Bank Open Ball Crew tryouts which will be held in May. You MUST attend each day of the tryouts (no exceptions) in order for your application to be considered. In Montreal, the selection process and training camp happen over three days while the Toronto tryouts are held over two days.
When can I complete the registration form?
In Montreal, the registration period is from February until the week before the National Bank Open Ball Crew tryouts in May. In Toronto, you can register from January 15 until May 1.
What are the perks of being a ball person?
In recognition of your commitment to us, Tennis Canada is pleased to offer the following benefits to all National Bank Open Ball Crew members:
- Volunteer accreditation pass that gives you access to Sobeys Stadium in Toronto or IGA Stadium in Montreal and the grounds during operating times, including access to the reserved volunteer seating area in both cities to watch the matches outside of your working hours.
- Psycho Bunny uniform package, which includes a hat, two t-shirts and a long-sleeved shirt
- Complimentary volunteer parking in a dedicated area
- Complimentary tickets
- One free meal per shift worked
- An invite to our famous ‘volunteer tournament party’ which includes a fantastic dinner, drinks and great prizes.
- PLUS MUCH MORE!
How can I prepare for the tryouts?
Plan to arrive in clothing suitable for high-energy performance. Please ensure you are wearing a pair of your own non-marking tennis/running shoes for the tryout. For the final round of tryouts it includes match simulation, just like during the National Bank Open, so it would be best to brush up on your tennis knowledge!
How long is each ballcrew shift?
All National Bank Open Ball Crew members are expected to be available every day of the tournament, all day. You will find out your match assignments each morning from your Ball Crew leaders.
