Gauff, Sabalenka Kick Off Campaigns on Stacked Thursday: Follow the Live Results from Toronto

Top two seeds join stars Osaka and Fernandez, who plays Krueger twice, in a loaded Centre Court lineup.

Follow along as results are updated throughout the day.

Thursday, Aug. 8 - Round Two

CENTRE COURT starts at 12:30 pm

  • [1] Coco Gauff (USA) d. [Q] Yafan Wang (CHN) 6-4, 6-4
    • Early leads were fleeting for Gauff, but she was able to take advantage of some late shakiness for Wang and break in the final game of each set.

Not before 2:00 pm

  • [Q] Ashlyn Krueger (USA) d. [15] Leylah Annie Fernandez (CAN) 6-4, 6-2
    • Krueger dominated the big points, converting three of four break points while saving all five on her own serve, as she overwhelmed the Canadian with her big hitting.

Not before 7:00 pm

  • [2] Aryna Sabalenka d. Yue Yuan (CHN) 6-2, 6-2
    • While she admitted post-match that she wasn't at her best, Sabalenka had plenty of firepower to break five times on her way to victory.
  • Elise Mertens (BEL) d. [WC] Naomi Osaka (JPN) 6-3, 6-4
    • Both sets followed similar patterns with Mertens breaking first, Osaka clawing it back only to be broken again late.

CASHMERE GRANDSTAND starts at 11:00 am

  • [11] Marta Kostyuk (UKR) d. Elina Svitolina (UKR) 6-2, 2-6, 6-2
    • The two Ukrainians exchanged lopsided sets before Kostyuk, buoyed by saving three break points early, raced through the decider.

Not before 12:30 pm

  • [LL] Taylor Townsend (USA) d. [WC] Marina Stakusic (CAN) 6-0, 6-2
    • Stakusic did not have a day after her gritty opening-round win as this battle was all Townsend, who won the first nine games in a row.
  • Peyton Stearns (USA) d. [7] Madison Keys (USA) 3-6, 7-5, 3-0 ret.
    • After squeaking out the second set, Stearns was starting to pull away when Keys was forced to retire with a left leg injury.

Not before 5:00 pm

  • [4] Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) d. Paula Badosa (ESP) 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2
    • A back-and-forth affair, Badosa served for the match at 6-5 in the second set but lost her next 10 points on serve, including all five in the tiebreak, as Ostapenko ran away with it late.
  • [12] Victoria Azarenka d. [Q] Greet Minnen (BEL) 6-3, 6-4
    • Azarenka figured out Minnen's serve just in time, winning six of her last seven return games after trailing by a set and a break.

COURT 1 starts at 11:00 am

  • [14] Diana Shnaider d. Magdalena Frech (POL) 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5)
    • Shnaider got off to a slow start, but managed to fight back into it from a set and a break down, emerging victorious in a nervy final set.
  • [8] Emma Navarro (USA) d. Magda Linette (POL) 6-2, 6-4
    • Navarro broke in the opening game and kept Linette under constant pressure throughout, responding to each Polish push with an effective counter.
  • Amanda Anisimova (USA) d. [5] Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-3
    • Anisimova kept Kasatkina under constant pressure, holding break points in all but one of the fifth seed's service games, with the knockout blow coming late in the second set.

Not before 4:00 pm

  • [7] Sofia Kenin (USA)/Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) d. Liudmila Samsonova/Yafan Wang (CHN) 6-3, 5-7, 10-6
    • The Americans had a much trickier time than in their opening match, but just when it looked like they were flagging in the second set, they turned things around early in the match tiebreak.
  • [WC] Ariana Arseneault (CAN)/Mia Kupres (CAN) d. Marie Bouzkova (CZE)/Anna Danilina (KAZ) walkover

After Suitable Rest

  • [WC] Bianca Jolie Fernandez (CAN)/Leylah Annie Fernandez (CAN) d. Catherine Harrison (USA)/Ashlyn Krueger (USA) 6-3, 4-6, 11-9
    • Leylah got her revenge on Krueger, avoiding a second loss to the American on the same day by winning five of the last six points from 6-8 down in the match tiebreak.

COURT 4 starts at 11:00 am

  • [10] Anna Kalinskaya d. Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) 6-2, 6-2
    • Kalinskaya finished strong in both sets, really off three straight breaks in each after sluggish starts.
  • [6] Liudmila Samsonova d. [Q] Moyuka Uchijima (JPN) 6-4, 6-2
    • The only real trouble Samsonova had in the match was closing it out, as it took her seven match points to finish the job.
  • Katie Boulter (GBR) d. [13] Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA) 1-1 ret.
    • Just two games in, the 2022 Toronto runner-up pulled out with a back injury.

Not before 3:30 pm

  • Giuliana Olmos (MEX)/Jessica Pegula (USA) d. Sloane Stephens (USA)/Taylor Townsend (USA) 6-3, 6-3
    • Olmos and Pegula improved as the match went along, overcoming an early break in the first and then reeling off the last four games in a row.
Not before 4:00 pm
  • [3] Catherine Dolehide (USA)/Desirae Krawczyk (USA) d. Hanyu Guo (CHN)/Makoto Ninomiya (JPN) 2-6, 6-3, 10-7
    • After a poor first set, the Americans squeaked out the second before controlling the breaker from the beginning.
