Monday, August 3 Toronto Preview: Andreescu Set for Opener Following Match Cancellation

The 2019 NBO champion was just about to take to Centre Court as scheduled on Sunday night, but Mother Nature forced Andreescu to wait another day before getting her Toronto campaign underway.

The Mississaugan joins four fellow Canadians who will also be in action on Monday. See when the Canucks will begin play around Sobeys Stadium.

On-Court Action

Centre Court’s play kicks off with Road to the NBO winner Kayla Cross taking on Brit Katie Boulter. The London, ON-native made her WTA 1000 main-draw debut in Montreal last year; 12-months later, the 21-year-old is coming off the biggest title of her career in Granby ahead of Toronto. Play begins at 12:30 pm.

The match will be followed by Andreescu’s postponed opener against Czech Nikola Bartunkova, who was originally scheduled to kick off the night session.

There will still be a Canadian under the lights of Centre Court on Monday night as Vancouverite Rebecca Marino takes on world No. 52 Zeynep Sonmez, not before 7 pm. The two-time Tennis Canada Female Player of the Year will play in her first WTA Tour match since Guadalajara in September.

Cadence Brace’s WTA 1000 debut was also pushed to Monday. The Torontonian is second on Grandstand against McCartney Kessler.

Carol Zhao will begin her sendoff tournament. The 31-year-old achieved a career-high of No. 131 in the WTA rankings and won nine ITF titles, including two W100s. Zhao also made her major debut by qualifying for the 2023 Wimbledon main draw. 

The Richmond Hillian plans to bid farewell to pro tennis after a 16-year career but first, she will make her sixth National Bank Open main-draw appearance, meeting world No. 65 Magda Linette fourth on Grandstand.

Finishing off Grandstand’s slate is Eva Lys against Panna Udvardy, and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens against Solana Sierra.

Two matches will continue into Monday as Magdalena Frech and Leolia Jeanjean continues from 4-all in the opening set, while Loïs Boisson leads Antonia Ruzic 5-3 in the first.

• Elena-Gabriela Ruse (ROM) vs Peyton Stearns (USA) – second on Court 4

• [Q] Rebecca Sramkova (SVK) vs [Q] Anna Blinkova – second on Court 3

Around the Grounds

Monday is Montellier day at Sobeys Stadium. On your way out from each session, grab a sample of Montellier’s peach can at the main gate and have some refreshing sparking water from Quebec for your safe trip home.
