While there is no shortage of surprise winners in tennis, and at the National Bank Open, the most important names to know heading into any tournament are the Top 10.
The player list for the 2025 National Bank Open presented by Rogers was released on Thursday, July 3, with the 72 best players on the WTA Tour set to compete in Montreal.
Over the coming weeks, we will be highlighting select players who are expected to be hitting the court at IGA Stadium later this month. And there is no better place to start than with the first 10 names on the entry list.
Let’s meet the WTA Top 10.
*Note: Ranking and statistics are as of the official player list announcement on July 3.
Aryna Sabalenka
- Age: 27
- Current Ranking: 1
- Career-High: 1
- NBO Appearance: 7th
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2021)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Quarter-final (2024)
- 2025 Record: 42-8
- Career NBO Record: 9-6
Aryna Sabalenka seems due for a big performance in Canada. She lost to the eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova last year in the quarter-finals but has elevated her game since. The world No. 1 has reached three straight Grand Slam finals and won three WTA 1000 titles since Toronto last year.
Canada is one of just three WTA 1000 events where Sabalenka has yet to reach the final. She is the best player in the world and is at her best on hard courts. Her powerful serve and huge groundstrokes make her the favourite at every event she enters.
Coco Gauff
- Age: 21
- Current Ranking: 2
- Career-High: 2
- NBO Appearance: 5th
- Best NBO Result: Quarter-finals (three times)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Round Three
- 2025 Record: 31-9
- Career NBO Record: 8-4
After a slow start to the year, Coco Gauff found another gear on the clay, reaching every big final and capping it off with her second Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros, beating Sabalenka in a thrilling final.

She now returns to a part of the season where she has historically had success. The last time the women passed through Montreal, it was part of a dominant summer for Gauff, where she won three titles, including her maiden major at the US Open. Canada remains the one big summer crown missing from her trophy case and she will be revved up to add it.
Jessica Pegula
- Age: 31
- Current Ranking: 3
- Career-High: 3
- NBO Appearance: 5th
- Best NBO Result: Champion (Twice)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Champion (2024)
- 2025 Record: 35-12
- Career NBO Record: 17-2
It has been almost 30 years since a player, male or female, won three singles titles in a row at the National Bank Open. Jessica Pegula will be looking to be the first since Monica Seles in the mid/late 1990s to do it.
Canada is the Buffalo-native's best event. In four main draw appearances, she has never failed to reach the semifinals. Two of her three WTA 1000 titles have been at the National Bank Open. Her 2023 title run in Montreal was particularly impressive as she beat Jasmine Paolini, Gauff, and Iga Swiatek on her way to lifting the trophy.
Iga Swiatek
- Age: 24
- Current Ranking: 4
- Career-High: 1
- NBO Appearance: Fourth
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2023)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Semifinal (2023)
- 2025 Record: 35-11
- Career NBO Record: 6-3
Iga Swiatek has not played often in Canada, but when she has, it has been notable. She made her WTA 1000 main draw debut in Toronto way back in 2019, also winning her first matches at that level on her way to the third round. The last time she visited the Great White North, she got to the semis in Montreal.

That semifinal run was her only appearance so far in Quebec. After a disappointing clay season, she showed some signs of improvement by reaching her first grass final in Bad Homburg. Swiatek is a six-time WTA 1000 winner on hard courts so the NBO could provide an even better spark for the former world No. 1.
Jasmine Paolini
- Age: 29
- Current Ranking: 5
- Career-High: 4
- NBO Appearance: Second
- Best NBO Result: Third Round
- Most Recent NBO Result: Third Round (2023)
- 2025 Record: 20-6
- Career NBO Record: 1-1
Jasmine Paolini will be making just her second appearance at the National Bank Open and a lot has changed since the last time she visited Montreal. When she played in 2023, she was an unseeded player who had never made it past the third round at a big event.
Now, she is the world No. 4, a two-time WTA 1000 champion, and two-time Grand Slam runner-up. Paolini is an all-surface threat, with her maiden 1000 title coming on hard court in Dubai last year. This will be Canadian fans’ first chance to appreciate what the Italian can really do.
Qinwen Zheng
- Age: 22
- Current Ranking: 6
- Career-High: 4
- NBO Appearance: Third
- Best NBO Result: Quarter-final (2022)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Second Round (2023)
- 2025 Record: 19-10
- Career NBO Record: 4-2
Like Swiatek and Paolini, Qinwen Zheng missed the 2024 edition of the National Bank Open. She was too busy winning an Olympic gold medal in Paris. Canada was the site of the Chinese’ first breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level, reaching the quarter-finals in Toronto back in 2022, her first quarter-final at a big event.

Zheng has steadily improved since that 2022 run. She has reached multiple WTA 1000 semifinals and a final last fall in Wuhan, as well as a Grand Slam final at the 2024 Australian Open. At just 22 years old, she is one of the most promising players on tour.
Mirra Andreeva
- Age: 18
- Current Ranking: 7
- Career-High: 6
- NBO Appearance: First
- 2025 Record: 32-10
Speaking of young, promising players, perhaps no one on the WTA has gotten more attention this year than Mirra Andreeva. While big things have been expected of the teen for several years, 2025 has been the season where she has truly established herself. Andreeva won back-to-back WTA 1000 titles earlier this year in Dubai and Indian Wells.
This will be the first chance Canadian fans get to have a look at Andreeva in-person on Canadian soil. The 18-year-old is expected to be the highest-ranked player making her debut at the National Bank Open. She is a can’t-miss prospect.
Madison Keys
- Age: 30
- Current Ranking: 8
- Career-High: 5
- NBO Appearance: Eighth
- Best NBO Result: Runner-Up (2016)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Second Round (2024)
- 2025 Record: 30-9
- Career NBO Record: 7-6
A finals run in Montreal was part of Madison Keys’ initial rise to stardom in the mid-2010s. She has been playing the best tennis of her life in 2025, winning her first Grand Slam singles title in January at the Australian Open and opening the season on a 16-match winning streak. What a story she has been this year.
Keys will be making her first trip to Montreal since 2021. She has not played very often at IGA Stadium so the local fans should take this opportunity to see the rejuvenated American crush a few balls.
Paula Badosa
- Age: 27
- Current Ranking: 9
- Career-High: 2
- NBO Appearance: Fourth
- Best NBO Result: Second Round (Three Times)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Second Round (2024)
- 2025 Record: 17-10
- Career NBO Record: 2-3
Paula Badosa will be making just her second appearance in Montreal, having missed the WTA’s last trip to Quebec’s largest city. When she is healthy, Badosa is a force to be reckoned with, especially on hard courts. She opened the season strong with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, although injuries dogged her through the spring.

While she bowed out early in Toronto last summer, she sandwiched that performance with a title in Washington and a semifinal run in Cincinnati. She also reached the quarter-finals of the US Open so she absolutely has the game to succeed in Montreal.
Emma Navarro
- Age: 24
- Current Ranking: 10
- Career-High: 8
- NBO Appearance: Second
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2024)
- Most Recent NBO Result: Semifinal (2024)
- 2025 Record: 21-16
- Career NBO Record: 3-1
A semifinal appearance in Toronto last August was part of Emma Navarro’s breakout summer. It was her first time reaching the final four at a big event and she followed it up by reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open.
Last year was her debut in Canada, so she has nothing but positive memories to draw on as she makes her first appearance in Montreal. Navarro should be happy to get back to the hard courts in July, as she also reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and won a title in Merida, Mexico, on the surface earlier this year.
*Please note, the Top 10 could change by the start of play on July 26 and appearance on the entry list is not a guarantee that a player will participate in the National Bank Open.
