2025 National Bank Open Toronto Players: Meet the ATP X-Factors

In just under one month’s time, the ATP Tour will land in Toronto for the 2025 National Bank Open.

The initial player list was released on Wednesday, July 2, and includes all of the Top 73 players in the ATP rankings. In the coming weeks, we will be highlighting players who are expected to be competing in Toronto at the end of July.

This week, let’s meet some X-Factors heading into the National Bank Open.

Alex de Minaur

  • Age: 26
  • Current Ranking: 11
  • Career-High: 6
  • NBO Appearance: 5th
  • Best NBO Result: Runner-up (2023)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: Runner-up (2023)
  • 2025 Record: 27-12
  • Career NBO Record: 7-4

The highest-ranked player on the list, former world No. 6 Alex de Minaur is on the outside, looking in on the ATP Top 10 and the Aussie’s best chance to sneak back into that group may come in Toronto as he has no points to defend after missing last year’s event.

The Australian No. 1’s first and only big event final came in the Ontarian capital in 2023, defeating Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev en route to a loss to Jannik Sinner in the title match.

De Minaur’s favourite surface may be grass but the 26-year-old has been at his best on hard court as of late, reaching the quarter-final at the U.S. Open and Australian Open.

Alexei Popyrin

  • Age: 25
  • Current Ranking: 22
  • Career-High: 21
  • NBO Appearance: 2nd
  • Best NBO Result: Champion (2024)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: Champion (2024)
  • 2025 Record: 12-14
  • Career NBO Record: 6-0

Australian players seem to love a trip to Canada as Alexei Popyrin’s career-best result also came in the Great White North.

In his first National Bank Open main draw appearance in 2024, the Aussie hoisted his first Masters 1000 title in Montreal, earning Top 10 wins over Grigor Dimitrov, Hubert Hurkacz, and Andrey Rublev.

Therefore, there is no doubt that eyes will be on the defending champion in Toronto this year.

Andrey Rublev

  • Age: 27
  • Current Ranking: 14
  • Career-High: 5
  • NBO Appearance: 6th
  • Best NBO Result: Runner-up (2024)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: Runner-up (2024)
  • 2025 Record: 18-14
  • Career NBO Record: 5-5

The man who fell short in that 2024 National Bank Open final to Popyrin, Rublev has shown that he is more than capable of making a deep run at a big event.

Montreal was the former world No. 5’s sixth Masters 1000 final and his third on hard court. That same year, the 27-year-old won the title in Madrid and reached the quarter-final in Cincinnati.

Rublev has yet to win a big event on the concrete but, after coming close in Canada last year, the world No. 14 has some extra motivation to hoist the trophy in Toronto.

Jakub Mensik

  • Age: 19
  • Current Ranking: 17
  • Career-High: 17
  • NBO Appearance: 1st
  • Best NBO Result: N/A
  • Most Recent NBO Result: N/A
  • 2025 Record: 22-12
  • Career NBO Record: 0-0

Miami was where 19-year-old Jakub Mensik made his mark on the ATP Tour. On top of meeting one of soccer’s greats, Lionel Messi, the Czech No. 1’s time in south Florida was highlighted by Top 10 victories over Jack Draper and Fritz before defeating 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic for his maiden ATP Tour title.

Mensik started the year ranked 48th and now sits at a career-high 17th with 2025’s next big hard court event just a few weeks away.

Joao Fonseca

  • Age: 18
  • Current Ranking: 54
  • Career-High: 54
  • NBO Appearance: 1st
  • Best NBO Result: N/A
  • Most Recent NBO Result: N/A
  • 2025 Record: 13-10
  • Career NBO Record: N/A

Another teenager on the rise in 2025, 18-year-old Joao Fonseca began the year ranked 145th and is now a career-high No. 54th.

The Brazilian won his first ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires earlier this year and made the third round in his Roland-Garros and Wimbledon main draw debuts.

On hard court, Fonseca has also fared quite well. The Rio de Janeiro-native reached the third round in Miami and beat Rublev in straight sets in his maiden Grand Slam main draw match at the Australian Open.

Tallon Griekspoor

  • Age: 29
  • Current Ranking: 29
  • Career-High: 21
  • NBO Appearance: 3rd
  • Best NBO Result: 1R (Twice)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: 1R (2024)
  • 2025 Record: 25-12
  • Career NBO Record: 0-2

Tallon Griekspoor may be the man that could silence the home crowd and spoil the party for Canadian tennis fans in Toronto.

The Dutch No. 1 has had three meetings against Canucks over the past month – Gabriel Diallo twice and Félix Auger-Aliassime once – and has won all three encounters while dropping just one set.

Griekspoor earned his best Masters 1000 result in Indian Wells this year, making the quarter-final, and now the Dutchman looks for his first win at the National Bank Open.

Flavio Cobolli

  • Age: 23
  • Current Ranking: 24
  • Career-High: 24
  • NBO Appearance: 2nd
  • Best NBO Result: 2R (2024)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: 2R (2024)
  • 2025 Record: 18-15
  • Career NBO Record: 1-1

Nicknamed “Admin”, Flavio Cobolli’s work off the court on the ATP Tour’s socials is just as good as his work on the court.

The former A.S. Roma academy player has two titles to his name in 2025, earning his first tour title in Bucharest before hoisting the trophy in Hamburg. Cobolli doesn’t shy away from the big stage either as the 23-year-old reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon.

Canadian fans will remember the Italian No. 3 defeating home favourite Auger-Aliassime last year in the first round of the National Bank Open.

Alexander Bublik

  • Age: 28
  • Current Ranking: 31
  • Career-High: 17
  • NBO Appearance: 5th
  • Best NBO Result: 2R (2021)
  • Most Recent NBO Result: 1R (2024)
  • 2025 Record: 16-14
  • Career NBO Record: 1-4

Alexander Bublik has had some viral moments in Canada, such as smiling on while Medvedev was far from happy after being called for hindrance in 2021. And few will forget his incredible trick shot – that unfortunately didn’t count – in Montreal last year.

So, expect more viral moments from the Kazakhstani in Toronto in what has been a quite successful year for him. Bublik made his first major quarter-final at Roland-Garros then the 28-year-old finally “got him” after defeating world No. 1 Sinner in Halle en route to his first title of 2025.
