NBO in Focus: Sinner, Djokovic set Wimbledon records en route to quarters

Welcome to the NBO in Focus. Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the ATP Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Toronto, which takes place from Jul. 26 to Aug. 7.

Days until National Bank Open: 18

Sinner Through to Quarters

Jannik Sinner strolled into the round of 16 at the All-England Club. The world No. 1 defeated Luca Nardi (6-4, 6-3, 6-0), Alexander Vukic (6-1, 6-1, 6-3), and Pedro Martinez (6-1, 6-3, 6-1) en route to Monday’s fourth-round match against 19th seeded Grigor Dimitrov, where things got tricky.

The Italian only conceded 17 games through his first three matches, equalling the record for the fewest games conceded to reach the Wimbledon men’s round of 16 in the Open Era, set by Jan Kodes in 1972.

Sinner was in big trouble against Dimitrov as he was down 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 to the veteran. However, Dimitrov suffered a pec injury and was forced to retire, allowing the world No. 1 to advance. He will battle Ben Shelton in the quarters, who moved on with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 win over Lorenzo Sonego

Now the world No. 1 hopes to ride the momentum and win Wimbledon for the first time. He reached the final at Roland-Garros for the first time this season but fell to Carlos Alcaraz in one of the most memorable matches in recent memory.

Djokovic achieves Wimbledon Milestone

Novak Djokovic defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday for his 100th career victory at Wimbledon. With the win, the 38-year-old became the third player to reach the 100-win milestone at the All-England Club - after Martina Navratilova and Roger Federer.

“Any history that I make in my favourite tournament, I’m blessed,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview.

After his round-of-16 victory against Alex de Minaur, Djokovic now has 101 wins at Wimbledon, 101 at Roland-Garros, 99 at the Australian Open, and 90 at the US Open.

Djokovic reached another milestone with his win on Saturday, recording his 51st-career 6-0 set at a Grand Slam, passing Andre Agassi for the most by any man in the Open Era.

The Serb has won seven of his 24 Grand Slams at Wimbledon and looks to make the final for the seventh time in a row, having lost the past two finals to Carlos Alcaraz.

Quarter-Finals take shape

Two-time defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz booked his ticket to the quarter-final over the weekend, defeating Andrey Rublev 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round. The world No. 2 will meet Cam Norrie on Centre Court Tuesday morning. Alcaraz is looking to join Djokovic, Federer, Pete Sampras, and Bjorn Borg on the list of men who have won three straight men’s singles titles at Wimbledon.

Taylor Fritz will battle Karen Khachanov in the other quarter-final match on that side of the draw.

Flavio Cabolli was the first man into the quarters in the top half of the draw after defeating Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3). He will take on Djokovic, who overcame a rough first set to beat Alex de Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
