Friday, August 1 Toronto Preview: Diallo, Fritz Ready for Wimbledon Rematch

Just under a month ago, Gabriel Diallo and Taylor Fritz played a thriller at Wimbledon. Now, Part II will take place in Toronto on Friday.

From a schedule full of big names, all eyes will be on the first match of the night session as the No. 2 seed and the last Canadian standing will renew their rivalry at Sobeys Stadium.

Here’s what to expect on Friday at the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto.

On-Court Action

At 7 pm, Gabriel Diallo and Taylor Fritz will once again do battle. The last time they met was a five-set thriller at the All-England Club, narrowly won by the American, who went on to reach the semis. This time, Diallo will have the added edge of the Canadian crowd in his corner.

That Wimbledon clash was the first meeting between the two.

Diallo carries the hopes on his country on his shoulders as he is the only Canadian left in the singles draw in Toronto. The Montrealer is seeded for the first time in his career at a Masters 1000 event and got through his opening match against Matteo Gigante in straight sets.

Fritz also won his opening match in straight sets, overcoming some shaky moments to defeat Roberto Carballes Baena.

They will be followed on court in the night session by an all-American clash between Ben fourth seed Ben Shelton and 25th seed Brandon Nakashima.

The day session will feature 2024 Montreal runner-up Andrey Rublev against 28th seed Lorenzo Sonego followed by yet another American, No. 7 seed Frances Tiafoe, taking on Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic.

In doubles, the third all-Canadian pair of Nicolas Arseneault and Justin Boulais will play their first-round match on Friday. They are scheduled to play Guido Andreozzi and Sander Arends in the second match after 12:30 pm on Court 1.

Around the Grounds

Friday night’s theme is Tropical Escape presented by Barbados. Between matches on Centre Court, there will be a “Serve Your Way to Barbados” contest with great prizes to be won.

Before the matches begin, catch the live music on the TC Main Stage, featuring Steelpan Drums.

While Barbados is the island of focus in the evening, the Cayman Islands will be doing a giveaway at the main entrance during the day session.

Recent Washington champion Alex de Minaur got an unexpected off day on Friday as his third-round opponent, Christopher O'Connell withdrew on Thursday, granting the 2023 Toronto runner-up a walkover and a few extra days of rest to recover from his tough title run last week. Rather than playing a match on Friday, the Demon will be signing autographs at 2:00 pm on the TC Main Stage.
