NBO in Focus: Top Seeds Stunned on Wimbledon Day 1

Welcome to the NBO in Focus. Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the ATP Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Toronto, which takes place from Jul. 26 to Aug. 7.

Days until National Bank Open: 25

Top-seeded men shocked in first round

Day 1 action at the season’s third major began Monday morning with several top seeds in the men’s draw headed home early after stunning upsets.

No. 8 Holger Rune was ousted in the first round by Nicolas Jarry 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in a five-set, come-from-behind thriller. It’s a disappointing result for the 22-year-old Dane, who reached the fourth round last year before he was eliminated by Novak Djokovic.

Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev was bounced from the All-England Club in the opening round in four sets by Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. Medvedev has now dropped three Grand Slam matches in a row after losses in the first round of Wimbledon and Roland-Garros following a second-round exit at the Australian Open.

Other top men’s seeds eliminated in the first round include Francisco Cerundolo (16), Alexei Popyrin (20), and Stefanos Tsitsipas (24).

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was given a scare by veteran Fabio Fognini, who pushed the world No. 2 to a fifth set before falling 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Alcaraz is in search of his third consecutive Wimbledon title and sixth title this season.

Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo both advanced past the first round on Monday. Auger-Aliassime defeated Australian James Duckworth in five sets, while Diallo cruised past Daniel Altmaier in straight sets.

Fritz, Griekspoor win Wimbledon Warmups

Taylor Fritz successfully defended his crown in Eastbourne, defeating Jenson Brooksby 7-5, 6-1 on Saturday. It’s the fourth time in his career that the American has won the 250-level tournament (2019, 2022, 2024, 2025).

“I don’t know what exactly it is about it, but I come here and always feel like I’m playing great tennis," Fritz said. “It’s always a great week for me. I think it always going to be a special place for me because it’s where I won my first tour title.”

It’s the 10th title of Fritz’s career, who will head into Wimbledon in good form after winning a pair of grass tournaments in Eastbourne and Stuttgart over the past three weeks.

Tallon Griekspoor will also head to the All-England Club on a high after defeating Corentin Moutet 7-5, 7-6(3) to win the Mallorca Championships. He did not drop a set en route to his first title of the season and third of his career.

Griekspoor jumped back into the ATP Top 30 with the win, moving from No. 34 to No. 29.
