While so far in 2025 she has been shut out at the big tournaments, Jessica Pegula is back on the courts she dominates and looking to make history.
The Buffalo-native has been the best player at the National Bank Open since the COVID-19 pandemic and this year, she is looking to do something no one has managed at the Canadian 1000 event in her two biggest rivals’ lifetimes.
What is it going to take for someone to solve Pegula in Canada? The National Bank Open Power Rankings size up her competition.

1) Coco Gauff (+1)
- Actual Ranking: 2
- 2025 Record: 31-10
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon R1
- Best NBO Result: Quarter-Final (Three times)
Gauff will look for her first match win since winning Roland-Garros back in early June when she takes to the court in Montreal. The American dominated the clay season, reaching the final at all three big events, but struggled on grass, failing to win a set in two tournaments.
Over the years, Gauff has been fairly consistent in Canada, reaching the quarter-finals in her first three appearances at the National Bank Open, although last year she slipped up in the third round. Canada is the one big summer hard court event the world No. 2 needs to add to her trophy cabinet, having already won Washington, Cincinnati, and the US Open.
2) Iga Swiatek (+1)
- Actual Ranking: 3
- 2025 Record: 42-11
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon Champion
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2023)
Just when it looked like Swiatek was starting to fall off, the former world No. 1 re-asserted herself into the conversation as to who is the best player in the world in dramatic fashion. After being dethroned at Roland-Garros, the Pole shocked the world at Wimbledon by scoring her sixth major, completing the career surface slam with an all-time showing in the final.
Swiatek is now just an Australian Open title away from completing the career Grand Slam. While Melbourne is still six months away, the road starts now as the tour shifts back to hard courts. Despite still seeking a finals appearance at the NBO, Swiatek has quite a history in Canada that includes her first WTA 1000 match wins back in 2019. Her last appearance was in Montreal in 2023, when she reached the semifinals.
3) Jessica Pegula (+6)
- Actual Ranking: 4
- 2025 Record: 35-13
- Notable Recent Result: Bad Homburg Champion*
- Best NBO Result: Champion (Twice)
Can Pegula become the first player, male or female, to three-peat at the National Bank Open this millennium? The American is looking to become the first person to win three straight singles titles at the Canadian 1000 event since Monica Seles in the late 1990s.
The two-time defending champion always brings her best in Canada. She has never failed to reach the semifinals in four main draw appearances. It does not matter which city, Pegula plays well here. She has been a bit boom-bust lately, having lost in the first round at three of her last five events, but a trip back to the Great White North could reinvigorate her.
*Pegula is playing this week in Washington.
4) Mirra Andreeva (+4)
- Actual Ranking: 5
- 2025 Record: 36-11
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon QF
- Best NBO Result: Debut
Canadian fans will get their first look at the WTA’s fastest-rising star this year in Montreal. Andreeva, who won two of the four WTA 1000 events on hard courts earlier this season, will be making her National Bank Open debut in 2025.
The 18-year-old has cooled off a bit since winning Dubai and Indian Wells back-to-back earlier in the season, but she has still been very consistent. Andreeva reached the quarter-finals at the last four big events (Madrid, Rome, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon) and now returns to the surface where she played her best tennis in the spring.
5) Amanda Anisimova (+5)
- Actual Ranking: 7
- 2025 Record: 31-13
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon Runner-Up
- Best NBO Result: Runner-Up (2024)
Anisimova is back at the tournament where her renaissance began a year ago, fresh off one of the biggest results of her career. Since reaching the title match in Toronto last August, the 23-year-old managed to win a 1000-level event in Doha and just reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.

She was ranked outside the Top 100 at this time last year but now finds herself inside the Top 10. As long as she can shake off the disappointment of her Wimbledon final defeat at Swiatek’s hands, Anisimova should be very confident returning to Canada. She has won at least two matches at five straight events, including two finals on grass.
6) Madison Keys (-2)
- Actual Ranking: 8
- 2025 Record: 32-10
- Notable Recent Result: Queen’s Club SF
- Best NBO Result: Runner-Up (2016)
It has been nearly a decade since Keys reached the final in Montreal, but in 2025 she could be primed to find herself in another title match at the National Bank Open. A rising star when she last reached the title match here, the 30-year-old has been playing some of her best tennis this year.
Keys started the year incredibly strong on the hard courts, winning her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open with victories over Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka back-to-back, and then reached the semis in Indian Wells. She had a tougher time on clay and grass but is now back on the surface where she has had the most success in her career.
7) Jasmine Paolini (-)
- Actual Ranking: 9
- 2025 Record: 28-12
- Notable Recent Result: Bad Homburg SF
- Best NBO Result: Third Round (2023)
Even though Paolini was unable to back up her runner-up appearances at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, the Italian’s consistent results have allowed her to stay inside the Top 10 on the WTA Tour.

It will be just Paolini’s second appearance in Canada, having reached the third round in Montreal two years ago. While many of her most notable results have come on the natural surfaces, the Italian is no slouch on hard courts. Her first big title came at the WTA 1000 in Dubai in 2024 and she reached the semifinals of Miami earlier this year.
8) Emma Navarro (New)
- Actual Ranking: 11
- 2025 Record: 24-17
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon R4*
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2025)
Navarro should have nothing but good feelings about playing in Canada, given that the only time she made the trip to the NBO in her career, she reached the semifinals. That run to the final four came as part of a breakout summer in 2024 when she also reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and semifinals of the US Open.
Channeling those positive memories of Toronto last year could help spark the young American. The last few months have been tough for Navarro but she started the year strong on the hard courts, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and winning the title at the WTA 500 event in Merida, Mexico in March.
*Navarro is playing in Washington this week.
9) Elena Rybakina (-4)
- Actual Ranking: 12
- 2025 Record: 31-13
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon R3*
- Best NBO Result: Semifinal (2021)
Like Navarro, Rybakina could draw on positive past experience in Canada to get her season back on track. The last time the Kazakhstani played in Canada was Montreal 2023 when she reached the semifinals. With her big serve, Rybakina is a perennial threat on the fast hard courts.

It has been a bit of a down year for the former world No. 3. For the first time since 2021, she arrives on the summer hard courts having not reached a “big” (Grand Slam or WTA 1000 final) yet in the season. Her best results in 2025 came early at the Middle East WTA 1000s where she reached the quarters and semis.
*Rybakina is playing in Washington this week.
10) Elina Svitolina (New)
- Actual Ranking: 13
- 2025 Record: 32-11
- Notable Recent Result: Wimbledon R3
- Best NBO Result: Champion (2017)
One of two former champions on the list, Svitolina was one of the best players on tour during the clay season, reaching the quarter-finals or better at every event she played on the dirt. That included a title run in Rouen.
The Ukrainian’s title run in Toronto back in 2017 was one for the ages, beating four Top 10 seeds on her way to victory. 2025 has been her best year since coming back from maternity leave in 2023. She has already matched her win total from last year and just needs one match win to mark her most victories in a season since 2021.
