Destination NBO by STM: Swiatek wins sixth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon

Welcome to the Destination NBO by STM Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the WTA Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Montreal, which takes place from Jul. 26 to Aug. 7.

Days until National Bank Open: 11

Swiatek crowned Wimbledon champion

Seven years on from her Wimbledon junior singles title, Iga Swiatek is a champion at the All-England Club once again, this time on the professional stage.

The world No. 3 defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in just 57 minutes to become the second player in the Open Era to record a double-bagel final at a Grand Slam. Steffi Graf was the only other player to do so in the 1988 Roland-Garros final.

The six-time major winner is now one Australian Open title away from a career Grand Slam.

Anisimova’s incredible journey to Wimbledon final

Despite not managing a game in the final, Anisimova’s run to become a Wimbledon finalist was truly inspiring.

In 2023, the American stepped away from tennis for mental health reasons, eventually falling outside of the Top 400.

Two years later, Anisimova reached her maiden Grand Slam final at the All-England Club. The 2024 National Bank Open runner-up took down Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal to earn her first win against a world No. 1 and third Top 3 win.

Sabalenka with eyes on defending U.S. Open title

As the home stretch of the tour approaches, Sabalenka is still without a Grand Slam title in 2025.

However, the 27-year-old excels on hard court, winning the title in Miami and finishing as runner-up in Indian Wells and at the Australian Open earlier this year. Sabalenka is also the defending champion in Cincinnati.

If the three-time major winner is unable to defend her title at the U.S. Open but still manages to stay a top of the WTA rankings, she would become the first player since Jelena Jankovic in 2008 to end the year as world No. 1 without winning a Grand Slam.
