Halys Topples Bublik in Kitzbühel

Quentin Halys completed a long journey from teenage phenom to ATP Tour champion on Sunday, defeating Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6(6) to win the Generali Open and lift his first ATP Tour trophy.

Halys, 29, is a former junior World No. 3 who earned his first ATP ranking point at 15 years old and now, 14 years later, earned his first ATP title with a victory over the No. 1 seed and defending Kitzbuhel champion in Bublik.

“It’s tough not to think about my family, because since I was a kid, the goal was to win an ATP title and today the dream came true,” Halys said. “I think I played an amazing match today. Sascha is such an amazing player, so I knew I had to play an amazing match to win and that’s what I did, so I’m so happy.”

It’s the second consecutive event that Halys has beaten the world No. 11 after the Frenchman also upset Bublik in the Round of 16 in Gstaad less than two weeks ago.

This was only the second final of Halys’ career, after he reached the final in Gstaad in 2024, where he lost to Matteo Berrettini in less than an hour.

Halys now jumps 32 spots to No. 51 in the ATP rankings, five shy of his career high of No. 46.

Van Assche Beats Blockx in Estoril

Luca Van Assche also won the first ATP title of his career over the weekend, defeating Alexander Blockx 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to win the Estoril Open.

It was a battle of two first-time tour-level finalists with the Frenchman Van Assche emerging victorious in a tight three-set battle.

“It was an incredible week for me,” Van Assche said. “I am proud of all my matches here. It was very difficult and exhausting, so I am very proud to be the winner this week.”

Sunday’s match was a glimpse into the future on the ATP Tour, as the meeting between the 22-year-old Van Assche and the 21-year-old Blockx was the first final between two players born in 2004 or later.

The 22-year-old now jumps 30 spots into the ATP Top 50 and reaches a career-high of No. 48 after starting the year at No. 166.

Coming Up On Tour

The North American hard-court swing is up and running with tournaments in Washington and Los Cabos before the tour descends on Montreal for the National Bank Open.

ATP 500 - Washington

Four Americans are among the top-eight seeds in Washington as Ben Shelton (2), Taylor Fritz (10), Learner Tien (16), and Frances Tiafoe (17) try to earn a win on home soil.

Australian Alex de Minaur holds the top seed at the tournament with Lorenzo Musetti (4), Jakub Mensik (7), and Arthur Fils (8) rounding out the tournament’s top competition.

ATP 250 - Los Cabos

Canadian and defending champion Denis Shapovalov heads to his final tune-up before the NBO and enters Los Cabos as the eighth seed.

Shapovalov won the event last year, the fourth ATP title of his career, with wins over Govind Nanda, Tristan Schoolkate, Adam Walton, and Aleksandar Kovacevic. The 27-year-old begins his title defence with an opening-round match against No. 93 Rinky Hijkata.

Fellow Canadian Gabriel Diallo is also in the field in Los Cabos and will take on American qualifier Tristan Boyer in round one.

Jiri Lehecka, Luciano Darderi, Francisco Cerundolo, Karen Khachanov, and Cameron Norrie are the tournament’s top-five seeds.
