Destination NBO by STM: Pegula gearing up to defend National Bank Open title

Welcome to the Destination NBO by STM Every week, we will keep you updated on all the action on the WTA Tour as we build towards the National Bank Open in Montreal, which takes place from Jul. 26 to Aug. 7.

Days until National Bank Open: 4

Pegula looks for Canadian three-peat in Montreal

With three titles to her name in already 2025, Jessica Pegula sets her sights on defending her National Bank Open crown in Montreal. The world No. 4 impressed on hard court earlier in the year, hoisting the trophy in Austin and reaching the final in Indian Wells.

Now, the 31-year-old is back on the concrete, coming in as the No. 1 seed this week at the WTA 500 event in Washington.

The 2024 U.S. Open finalist will look to become the first women since Monica Seles in the late 1990s to win three straight titles at the National Bank Open.

Bouchard’s last dance

An icon in Canadian tennis, former world No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard announced that she will retire from professional tennis following the National Bank Open in her hometown of Montreal.

“You’ll know when it’s time. For me, it’s now,” Bouchard said on social media on Wednesday. “Ending where it all started: Montreal.”

The 31-year-old was granted a main draw wildcard for her home tournament, finishing off a storied career which included becoming the first Canadian women in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in 2014.

Sabalenka, Badosa withdraw from NBO

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has withdrawn from the National Bank Open, seeking extra rest prior to her U.S. Open title defence.

“I’m looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I’ve decided it’s in my best interest to skip Montreal,” Sabalenka said Wednesday in a statement.

Due to an injury, world No. 10 Paula Badosa has also withdrawn. The Spaniard was forced to retire in the quarter-final in Berlin but still competed at Wimbledon, where she was eliminated in the first round.
