Top seeds ousted early
It is safe to say that the first round at Wimbledon had its fair share of upsets. Under a month after winning Roland-Garros, Coco Gauff was stunned by world No. 42 Dayana Yastremska in straight sets.
Gauff was one of four members of the Top 10 to lose in their opening match. World No. 4 Jasmine Paolini then lost in the second round.
Aryna Sabalenka remains in the singles draw and the world No. 1 said it best when she said, “hopefully no more upsets in this tournament,” as the 27-year-old looks for her first Grand Slam title of 2025.
A new champion to be crowned at the All-England Club
Wimbledon has by far been the most unpredictable major on the WTA Tour in recent years. In the last seven years, the tournament has featured seven different first-time All-England Club champions, and this year will be eight.
The third round was the last that involved a former champion as 2022 winner Elena Rybakina lost to Clara Tauson and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova was defeated by Emma Navarro.

The 2025 edition of Wimbledon will not only feature a first-time champion, but none of the remaining eight players have even reached the final at the All-England Club.
British ladies singles champion drought continues
Heading into this year’s Wimbledon, there were high expectations for a British woman to make a deep run at the All-England Club.
For the first time since 1986, three British players were a part of the WTA Top 50 but only one made it as far as the fourth round, Sonay Kartal – the lowest ranked of the three. Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter were eliminated in the third and second round, respectively.
Therefore, the drought for a ladies singles champion at Wimbledon will continue, now reaching 48 years.
