Thursday, July 31 Toronto Preview: Battle of Former Champions Highlights Night Session

As third round action begins on Thursday, the intensity ramps up at Sobeys Stadium as big names are starting to find themselves across the net from each other.

Three former National Bank Open champions will play tonight but at least one will see their bid for a second title in Canada come to an end as the biggest match of the day will pit two of them against each other.

Here’s what to expect on Thursday at the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto.

On-Court Action

All eyes will be on the final match of the night session on Centre Court today when 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev takes on defending champion Alexei Popyrin.

Medvedev was the top seed when he won the title in 2021 but is No. 10 this year. Popyrin, the 18th seed who beat Canadian Nicolas Arseneault in the second round, was unseeded when he shockingly won the title in Montreal last year. Medvedev leads their head-to-head 4-1, although Popyrin’s lone win was in their most-recent meeting at a hard-court Masters 1000 last fall in Paris.

Every singles match on Centre Court on Thursday features two seeded players. The day session pits No. 3 Lorenzo Musetti against No. 26 Alex Michelsen followed by No. 8 Casper Ruud against No. 30 Nuno Borges. Top seed Alexander Zverev, the 2017 Montreal champion, will precede the Medvedev-Popyrin match against No. 32 Matteo Arnaldi.

The Canadian content is all in doubles, which gets underway on Wednesday, but there is plenty of it on Court 1.

First, Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau are taking on Americans Alex Michelsen and Frances Tiafoe in the third match, followed by Liam Draxl and Cleeve Harper facing off with seventh seeds Christian Harrison and Evan King. Top seeds Marcela Arevalo and Mate Pavic kick off the action on Court 1 against Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik.

Around the Grounds

Thursday is National Bank Day at the National Bank Open.

Our title sponsor will be giving away water bottles at the main entrance. It’s been a very hot tournament so far so make sure to grab one, and use it, on your way in. The giveaway will be for both the day and night sessions.

Swing by the National Bank Activation as well for a sweet treat.

Prior to the start of the night session, there will be an on-court ceremony on Centre Court to celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Bank as a partner of Tennis Canada.

Rain on Wednesday postponed Vasek Pospisil’s appearance at Tennis Talk with Arash Madani, but never fear! The chat has been rescheduled for 3 pm on Thursday at the TC Main Stage.
