This Week in Tennis: Sinner reclaims top rank with Monte-Carlo Triumph

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Sinner Back on Top After Beating Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner has reached the top of the mountain once again.

The Italian defeated his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in straight sets on Sunday morning 7-6(5), 6-3 to win his first 1000-level title on clay at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

It was the first meeting between the two best men in the world since their clash at the ATP Finals in November. There was a little extra on the line on Sunday as Sinner reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking with his second-straight victory over Alcaraz, breaking the Spaniard’s 22-week run atop the ATP rankings.

Monte-Carlo represented Sinner’s eighth Masters 1000 title and third straight in 2026 after he won both Indian Wells and Miami to claim the Sunshine double last month. He is the first man to win the first three 1000 titles in a season since Novak Djokovic in 2015.

“I am surprised in a very good way, and [the win] means a lot to me, Sinner said. “I still need a little bit of time to realize what happened.

“Carlos, you and your team are doing amazing things year after year. “You keep showing the player you are, achieving things nobody else has achieved before at your age. Facing you, especially in the final it makes it even more special."

Sinner is now 7-10 in his career against his main rival and 2-3 against Alcaraz on clay as the pair continue to fine-tune their form ahead of Roland-Garros. Sinner also snapped Alcaraz’s 17-match win streak on clay.

“We have seen Jannik's level on clay and I think he's been improving a lot year by year,” Alcaraz said. “I think he's reaching a level on clay that is going to be really dangerous for everybody.”

Sinner dropped just one set in Monte-Carlo, to Tomas Mahac in the round of 16, ending his incredible 37-set streak at Masters events that began last year in Paris. The 24-year-old has won his past 17 matches while also extending his 1000-level win streak to 22.

Andreeva Beats Potapova to Win Linz

Mirra Andreeva captured her second WTA title of the season on Sunday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 to win the trophy in Linz.

It is the 18-year-old’s second 500-level title of the season, after her win in Adelaide, and fifth of her career. She becomes the third woman to win multiple titles this year, joining world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula.

The world No. 9 was pushed to her limit in Austria as Potapova jumped out to a 6-1, 1-0 lead before Andreeva was able to right the ship to take the final two sets.

Potapova, who began representing Austria at the start of the 2026 season, became the first player representing the country to reach the final in Linz since the tournament’s inception in 1991. She previously won the event while representing Russia in 2023.
