This Week in Tennis: Sinner, Sabalenka add to Trophy Cases in Indian Wells

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Sinner Completes Perfect Run; Joins Federer, Djokovic in History Books

Jannik Sinner completed a perfect run at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) win over Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final. The 24-year-old did not drop a set in his run through California, becoming the first man to win consecutive Masters 1000 titles (adding to his title last October in Paris) without losing a set since the series was introduced in 1990. He has now won 22 consecutive sets at 1000-level events, the second-longest streak in series history, trailing only Novak Djokovic’s 24 in 2016.

The world No. 2 pulled out all the stops to earn his first title of the season, rallying from a 4-0 deficit in the second-set tiebreak, rattling off seven-straight points to claim the championship.

"I kept believing and kept pushing," Sinner said about his tiebreak comeback. "I went for my shots a little more. A third set, we would have started even, so I tried my best to close it out and I am very happy. It was an incredible ending.

"It was a very, very tough match. It is great to see Daniil back playing this level. I am very happy. I came here from day one, training really hard and this result makes me very happy. Sharing this moment with the team and friends here is really special."

With his win at the BNP Paribas Open, Sinner joins Roger Federer and Djokovic as the only men to have won all the premier hard-court events on the ATP Tour, including all six Masters 1000 events, the ATP Finals, the Australian Open and US Open. Andre Agassi won all five Masters 1000 titles held on hard courts during his career, as well as the two hard-court Grand Slams and ATP Finals.

The Italian surged to No. 2 in the ATP Race, trailing only his rival Carlos Alcaraz, whose undefeated season was ended by Medvedev in Saturday’s semifinal.

Medvedev, who was coming off a title victory in Dubai, was looking to become the first person since Djokovic at the 2023 ATP Finals to beat Alcaraz and Sinner in the same tournament.

Sabalenka Rallies to Win First Indian Wells Title

Aryna Sabalenka finally earned her first Indian Wells title with a comeback 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Elena Rybakina on Sunday.

The 27-year-old had come up short in her first two Indian Wells finals, losing to Rybakina three years ago and teenager Mirra Andreeva last year.

Sabalenka fought back from match point down in the third set to earn a small measure of revenge on Rybakina, who had defeated the world No. 1 in four consecutive WTA tour finals, including the Australian Open earlier this season, Sabalenka’s only 2026 loss to date.

“Thank God, I got this trophy. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life,” Sabalenka said in her post-match interview on the Tennis Channel.  “I think the whole idea going into this match was to be mentally strong, to stay strong, no matter what, to show with the body language that I’m here, I’m fighting.”

This is the 10th WTA 1000 title of Sabalenka’s career, joining Serena Williams (13), Iga Swiatek (11), and Victoria Azarenka (10) as the only women to have won double-digit 1000-level titles (since 2009).

Sabalenka now heads to Miami for the second leg of the Sunshine double, where she is the defending champion.

“I’m defending champion there, so I have to bring my best tennis there,” Sabalenka said of the Miami Open. “But with these vibes that I’m taking from here, I think I’ll be able to be there and to fight and to do my very best to defend that beautiful trophy.”
