This Week in Tennis: Sinner’s Dominance Continues in Madrid

Welcome to This Week in Tennis, where we catch up on all the latest and biggest stories from the ATP and WTA Tours.

Sinner Continues Historic Masters Run

Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run by cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alexander Zverev to win the Madrid Open on Sunday. The Italian completely overwhelmed his opponent and did not face a single break point against the third-ranked Zverev in the 58-minute win.

The world No. 1 became the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles, adding Madrid to wins in Paris (2025), Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo this season. Sinner has dropped just two sets across the five 1000-level championship runs.

“I think there is a lot of work behind it,” Sinner said about winning five straight Masters titles. “A lot of dedication and sacrifice I put in every day. Obviously, it means a lot to me, seeing these results. I’m very happy that I’ve continued to believe in myself. I’m showing up every day, at every practice session, trying to put in the right work with the right discipline.”

Sinner has now won eight of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour and has the chance to complete the set in Rome next week. If he is able to win his home tournament, Sinner will join Novak Djokovic as the only man to have completed the Career Golden Masters.

“I think there's a big gap between Sinner and everybody else right now,” Zverev said after the loss. “It's difficult to say that there's not a gap between Sinner and everybody else if he hasn't lost a match in Masters events since Shanghai.”

Madrid was the 15th “Big Title” of Sinner’s career (Four Grand Slams, two ATP Finals, nine Master 1000), pulling him into a tie with rival Carlos Alcaraz (Seven Grand Slams, eight Masters 1000), who withdrew from Madrid, Rome, and Roland-Garros due to a wrist injury.

Kostyuk Wins First WTA 1000 Title

Marta Kostyuk defeated Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in the Madrid Open final on Saturday, becoming a WTA 1000 champion for the first time in her career.

The win marks consecutive WTA titles for Kostyuk, who emerged victorious in Rouen two weeks ago. It’s the third WTA title of the 23-year-old’s career.

"It feels unbelievable to stand here right now," Kostyuk said. "It took me many years to reach this point, and the one word I think about right now is consistency. It's showing up every day, no matter how hard it is, no matter how much you love or hate what you do. And I've been doing that really well the past year.”

Kostyuk is undefeated on clay this season (11-0) after impressive wins over Jessica Pegula, Linda Noskova, and Andreeva en route to the title. The Ukrainian now has five Top 10 wins in 2026.

She now vaults to a career-high of No. 15 in the WTA rankings.
