Shapovalov wins second 2025 title

Denis Shapovalov is finding his game just in time for his hometown tournament.

The Canadian cruised to his second trophy of 2025 at the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos, Mexico, defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-2 in the final. Shapovalov did not drop a set en route to the title and lost a total of 18 games in four matches.

“There’s not many weeks like this throughout the year. It’s my second [title] of the year, it’s the first time I’ve been able to win multiple titles in one season,” Shapovalov said in his post-match press conference. “I’m very happy, it means a lot and it’s a great start to the hard-court swing and hopefully I can keep going with this momentum.”

The 26-year-old won his first title of the season in Dallas back in February when he defeated then-world No. 5 Casper Ruud in straight sets.

Shapovalov jumped back into the ATP’s Top 30 (No. 28) with the win and will be seeded for the National Bank Open in Toronto, which begins on July 26. He is one of five Canadian men with main draw entries thus far, joining Felix Auger-Aliassime, Gabriel Diallo, Liam Draxl, who will be making his first ATP Tour main draw appearance, and Vasek Pospisil, who will be competing in his final event before retiring.

Alexander Bublik continued his breakthrough season on Sunday, defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to win the EFG Swiss Open in Gstaad. It’s his second ATP title of the season and sixth of his career.

Bublik is now 17-5 in tour-level matches since the start of the Madrid Open in April and has vaulted to No. 30 in the ATP rankings after dropping as low as 82 on March 3.

The Kazakhstani is currently projected to be the 26th seed at the National Bank Open.
